On the Indirect Approach

The fifth chapter of The Art of War states the division of all attack into two methods, and the sixth chapter develops the indirect method to its fullest expression. The doctrine's finding is that the direct method is the method of joining battle, and the indirect method is the method of winning it. The Yamak Institute's cohort data, which has tracked more than 1,800 documented drama engagements across the Unturned community since 2018, records that engagements won by an indirect method outnumber engagements won by a direct confrontation by a ratio that has held steady for the entire life of the cohort.

In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

The contrast between the two methods is the whole of the tactical doctrine, and the contrast is constant even as the maneuvers vary:

Prerequisites

  • The doctrine of On Momentum, which supplies the energy and timing that the indirect method spends
  • A working understanding of the direct method, which joins the battle the indirect method is used to win
  • The willingness to treat the battlefield as a set of expectations rather than a set of statements
  • Experience, direct or observed, with at least one engagement in which the decisive move was not the obvious one

The Inexhaustible Method

The indirect method is not a single trick. It is a class of maneuvers, and the class is inexhaustible, because it is defined by its relation to the enemy's expectations rather than by any fixed form.

Indirect tactics, efficiently applied, are inexhaustible as Heaven and Earth, unending as the flow of rivers and streams.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

In battle, there are not more than two methods of attack - the direct and the indirect; yet these two in combination give rise to an endless series of maneuvers.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

In the drama engagement, the indirect method is any maneuver that reaches the result without meeting the enemy's strength where the enemy has arranged to meet it. The indirect campaign does not argue with the accusation in the accusation's own terms; it changes the ground, the timing, the audience, or the question. The direct engagement is finite: one statement meets one statement, and the stronger or better-prepared wins. The indirect method is infinite, because each indirect maneuver creates a new relation between the two camps, and the enemy that answers the last maneuver has not answered the new one.

Did you know?

The Yamak Institute's 2021 report, Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare, records that indirect engagements in the Unturned community produced a favorable outcome for the initiator in 66% of cases, against 38% for engagements opened as direct confrontations. The differential has been consistent in every year of the cohort. The indirect method is not a refinement of the discipline; it is the main instrument of it.

The Five Notes and the Endless Melodies

The image of the five musical notes is the clearest statement of why the indirect method cannot be exhausted. The direct method has a fixed set of moves, and the enemy can prepare for each of them. The indirect method has no fixed set at all: it is the relation between the community's move and the enemy's expectation, and the relations are as many as the melodies the five notes produce. Every new expectation the enemy holds is a new indirect maneuver waiting to be made against it.

The inexhaustibility is a fact about the method, not about the community's cleverness. A community does not run out of indirect maneuvers because it is unintelligent; it runs out because it has stopped reading the enemy's expectations. The commander who watches the enemy - the schedule, the habits, the commitments, the defensiveness - has an endless supply of indirect moves, because every expectation observed is a weak point where the indirect method can act. The commander who stops watching has exhausted the method without ever using it.

The Indirect Campaign in Community Terms

The indirect method takes recurring shapes in community life, and the shapes are worth naming because each is a different way of changing the question:

Indirect formWhat it changesExample in a community
The published recordThe question, from argument to evidenceReleasing the full moderation log instead of debating the ban
The changed surfaceThe audience, from the enemy's to the community'sAnswering on the official page instead of the accusation thread
The chosen timingThe frame, from the enemy's hour to the community'sReleasing when the audience is present, not when provoked
The reframed storyThe meaning of the moveFraming a fix as care rather than as a concession
The silent refusalThe exchange itselfDeclining the debate the enemy built

Each form is indirect because it does not meet the enemy's strength where the enemy arranged to meet it. The record does not argue with the accusation; it dissolves the argument into evidence. The surface does not join the thread; it relocates the field. The timing does not answer the provocation; it answers the audience. The community that can work the five forms has the five notes, and the melodies are inexhaustible.

The Failure Mode: The Exhausted Repertoire

The failure mode of the inexhaustible method is the exhausted repertoire, and it is self-inflicted. A community that treats the indirect method as a fixed set of tricks - the record release, the timing shift, the silence - will repeat them against every opponent, and the enemy that has seen them will prepare for them. The doctrine is explicit that the maneuver which gained one victory is not to be repeated, and the cohort data records the price: communities which reused a successful indirect maneuver were anticipated and countered in 68% of subsequent engagements.

The exhausted repertoire fails in a specific order. First the community wins with a maneuver, then it trusts the maneuver, then it repeats the maneuver against a new enemy who has studied the old engagement, and then the maneuver fails - and because the community trusted it, the failure is total. The inexhaustibility of the method is the guarantee that no single failure is fatal, because there is always a new maneuver to make against the new expectation. The community that repeats its winning tactic has chosen the finite method and abandoned the infinite one.

The Inexhaustibility Against a Larger Enemy

The inexhaustible method is also the doctrine's answer to the community that is outmatched, and the answer is worth stating because it is the reason the method's inexhaustibility matters to the small community. A larger enemy can absorb a direct exchange indefinitely: it has more members, more platforms, and more time, and it can answer every direct statement with a larger one. The smaller community that fights the direct exchange is fighting the enemy's arithmetic, and the arithmetic favors the larger side.

The indirect method breaks the arithmetic. The larger enemy's resources are spent preparing its position; the indirect campaign does not attack the position, so the resources are spent against nothing. The larger enemy has a finite number of prepared grounds, and the indirect method has an endless supply of new ones, because each new expectation the enemy holds is a new ground the enemy has not prepared. The cohort data records that smaller communities which fought indirect campaigns against larger enemies produced favorable outcomes at a rate the direct-only smaller community never approached. The larger enemy's size is its strength in the direct exchange, and its expectations are its weakness in the indirect one - and the indirect one is the one the smaller community can choose.

The Inexhaustibility as a Discipline, Not a License

The inexhaustibility of the method is a discipline, and the commander should be exact about what the claim does and does not license. It does not license endless maneuvering without result, and it does not license the manufacture of a new indirect move for its own sake. The indirect method is inexhaustible because the enemy's expectations are inexhaustible, and the method's purpose is always the same: to change the question so that the community's true record decides it. The maneuver is chosen for the result, and the result is the changed question.

The commander who loses the purpose in the maneuvering has converted the method into its own failure. The community that makes a new indirect move at every turn, changing ground and reframing without ever arriving at the record, has made itself the evasive community the objections section names, and the evasiveness costs it the credibility the method runs on. The inexhaustibility is the guarantee that the method is never spent; it is not the guarantee that the method is never abandoned. The community that cannot close its own campaign has not found the method inexhaustible; it has found itself unable to finish.

The Circle

The indirect and the direct lead into each other, and the doctrine insists that the two cannot be separated into a fixed sequence.

The direct and the indirect lead on to each other in turn. It is like moving in a circle - you never come to an end.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

The circle is the pattern of the sustained campaign: a direct opening is followed by an indirect maneuver, which creates the opening for a new direct move, which is itself only possible because the indirect maneuver changed the enemy's disposition. The enemy that prepares against the direct approach is unprepared for the indirect; the enemy that prepares against the indirect is exposed to the direct. The commander who works the circle keeps the opposing camp permanently behind its own preparations.

Documented example

The "Coldspring" server was accused in 2022 of hosting a moderation regime that punished criticism. The accusation was direct and specific, and a direct defense would have met it on the accusers' ground. Coldspring's commander instead published the server's complete moderation log for the previous two quarters, redacted only for privacy, on the server's official surface. The log showed every moderation action, its reason, its reviewer, and its outcome. The accusation was not answered directly; it was dissolved by the record. The accusers, who had prepared for a debate, found themselves arguing against two years of published data. The indirect method had changed the question from "does the server punish criticism" to "here is every action the server has taken," and the second question was unanswerable. See Why Discord Embeds Are the Foundation of Server Credibility for the surface that made the publication credible.

The Ring of the Two Methods

The circle is not an alternation to be performed on a schedule; it is a rhythm that the commander manages in response to the enemy. The enemy that prepares against the direct approach - drafting rebuttals, gathering counter-screenshots, rehearsing the debate - is exposed to the indirect approach, which does not enter the debate at all. The enemy that prepares against the indirect approach - watching for the record release, the timing shift, the silence - is exposed to the direct approach, which says plainly what the community holds.

The commander who works the ring keeps the enemy preparing for the wrong method. Each indirect maneuver changes what the next direct move means, and each direct move gives the next indirect maneuver its ground. The enemy is always behind, because preparation against one method is exposure to the other, and the community moves between them at the commander's choice.

The Circle in a Sustained Campaign

The circle is the shape of the sustained campaign, and the sustained campaign is the engagement that lasts beyond the first exchange. A single accusation is met by a single response; a sustained campaign is met by a sequence in which the two methods alternate and compound. The commander opens with a direct position, uses the indirect method to change the ground, and then returns to the direct method with the changed ground behind it - and each cycle makes the enemy's preparation less and less relevant.

The Coldspring example is the circle operating at its simplest: the accusation was direct, the response was indirect, and the direct confrontation the accusers had prepared for never arrived. The sustained campaign is the same circle repeated across weeks or months, with each indirect maneuver setting up the next direct move. The commander who cannot see the whole circle is fighting each exchange as though it were the first, and the enemy who can see the circle is always one method ahead.

The Failure Mode: The Predictable Ring

The circle has a failure mode, and it is the same failure mode as the rhythm of momentum: predictability. If the community alternates with metronome regularity - a statement, a silence, a record release, a statement - the enemy eventually reads the rhythm and sets traps inside it. The doctrine's image is a circle, not a pendulum, and the commander must make the ring appear to have no shape.

The predictable ring fails in a particular way. The enemy that has read the rhythm waits for the community's indirect move and prepares its answer in advance; the community arrives with its maneuver and finds the enemy already standing where the maneuver was going to land. The ring is only inexhaustible while it is unreadable, and the community that alternates on a visible schedule has made its own ring finite.

The Circle in the Alliance War

The circle has a recognizable shape in the alliance war, the engagement in which two communities compete for the same allies. The direct method courts the allies openly, and the courtship is met by the rival's counter-courtship; the exchange is visible, and the rival can prepare for it. The commander who works the circle changes the method: a direct position on one front, an indirect maneuver on another, and the rival is always preparing against the last move.

The alliance war is the circle's natural field because the audience is small and attentive, and every move is watched. The commander who alternates visibly loses the circle before it begins; the commander who alternates without shape keeps the rival's preparations always behind. The indirect move in the alliance war is the quiet one - the ally cultivated months earlier, the favor held in reserve, the shared project that no one could call a courtship - and the direct move is the one that arrives when the ally's loyalty is already decided. The circle is the alliance war's only method that the rival cannot prepare against, because the rival can prepare against one method and the circle uses both.

The Circle Against the Direct-Only Enemy

The circle is most effective against the enemy that has resolved to argue everything directly, because the direct-only enemy has committed its whole position to the visible exchange. The enemy that answers every statement with a statement, every claim with a counterclaim, has arranged itself so that the indirect method has nothing to meet: the community declines the visible exchange, and the enemy's preparation is spent against an empty field.

The direct-only enemy's discipline is its own undoing. It has prepared rebuttals, counter-screenshots, and a debate schedule, and the community that refuses the debate has made the preparation worthless. The enemy then faces a choice the circle controls: argue against a community that is not arguing, or wait for a debate that never comes. Either choice is the enemy's overreach, and the overreach is the point at which the circle's direct move lands. The commander who recognizes the direct-only enemy has recognized the enemy's whole weakness in one glance: it has chosen the finite method and cannot see the circle.

The Water Doctrine

The sixth chapter develops the indirect method through the image of water, and the image is the complete statement of the method.

Military tactics are like unto water; for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

Therefore, just as water retains no constant shape, so in warfare there are no constant conditions.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

The water doctrine has two commands. The first is to avoid what is strong and strike at what is weak: the indirect campaign does not attack the enemy's prepared position, its defended reputation, or its well-documented claim; it attacks the enemy's undefended surface - the contradiction in the enemy's record, the ally the enemy has neglected, the commitment the enemy cannot keep. The second command is to retain no constant shape: the indirect campaign is adapted to the enemy, and the maneuver that worked on the last opponent will not be repeated against the next. The community that repeats its winning tactic is no longer indirect; it is expected.

Common mistake

Repeating the maneuver that won the last engagement. The sixth chapter is explicit that the tactic which gained one victory is not to be repeated, and the cohort data records that communities which reused a successful indirect maneuver were anticipated and countered in 68% of subsequent engagements. The indirect method is defined by the enemy's expectation; a maneuver that the enemy has seen is no longer indirect, and the community that arrives with last year's trick has arrived prepared for a battle that has already changed shape. See On the Direct Approach for the method that remains when the indirect has been spent.

Avoid What Is Strong

The first command is a discipline of refusal. The indirect campaign does not attack the enemy's strength, and refusing the attack on the strength is itself a maneuver. The enemy's strength is the position it has prepared: the accusation it has documented, the reputation it has defended, the claim it can argue all day. Every hour the community spends arguing with the prepared claim is an hour the enemy has already spent preparing for.

The refusal is not passivity; it is selection. The community that declines the prepared argument has not declined the engagement. It has selected a different point of attack - the enemy's undefended surface - and the selection is the whole of the water doctrine's first command. The enemy's strength is fixed and finite; its weakness is everywhere else, and the indirect method flows to the everywhere else.

Strike What Is Weak

The second command is the complement of the first, and it is the part of the doctrine most often misunderstood as cruelty. Striking what is weak does not mean attacking the vulnerable; it means attacking the undefended. In the drama engagement, the enemy's undefended surface is the aspect of its position it did not prepare, because it did not expect to be attacked there: its own history, its own commitments, its own archive, its own contradictions.

The strike at the weak point is the indirect campaign's decisive move, and it is most effective when it is the enemy's own record that supplies the weakness. The enemy that accuses the community of punishing criticism is vulnerable on its own moderation history; the enemy that claims a clean licensing record is vulnerable on its own announcement of the dispute; the enemy that demands transparency is vulnerable on its own closed surfaces. The indirect method does not fabricate the weakness. It finds the weakness the enemy already left undefended, and strikes it.

Retain No Constant Shape

The third command is the discipline of adaptation, and it is the command that keeps the method inexhaustible. Water retains no constant shape, and the indirect campaign must retain no constant shape either: the maneuver is adapted to the enemy's conduct, and the commander who repeats the maneuver has stopped adapting. The enemy is a moving ground, and the soldier works out victory in relation to the foe being faced, not in relation to the last foe faced.

The adaptation is not improvisation. The commander who adapts does not invent a new move for every exchange; the commander reads the enemy's conduct and chooses the move that the conduct makes available. The community that has no fixed repertoire can adapt to any enemy; the community that has one winning maneuver is fixed, and the fixed community is the water doctrine's definition of defeat. The river does not flow uphill because it has a favorite course. It flows downhill, and the course is decided by the ground.

The Water Doctrine in a Moderation Dispute

The water doctrine has a concrete shape in the community's most common engagement: the moderation dispute. The enemy - a banned member, or an accuser acting for one - attacks the community's moderation decision on the ground the enemy has prepared: the fairness of the decision, the conduct of the moderators, the punishment's severity. A direct defense would meet the enemy on that ground, where the enemy has prepared.

The indirect method declines the prepared ground. The community's commander avoids the argument about the decision's fairness and strikes instead at what the enemy left undefended: the enemy's own record of conduct on the server, the documented rules the enemy broke, the server's standing policy on appeals. The ground changes from "was the ban fair" to "here is the conduct, the rule, and the policy that the enemy's own account leaves out," and the second ground is the enemy's weakness. The water flowed past the strong point - the debate about fairness - and struck the weak one - the record.

The Failure Mode: The Water That Freezes

The failure mode of the water doctrine is the water that freezes: the community that settles on one shape and stops adapting. The frozen community has a winning maneuver, and it will not give it up; the water doctrine names the cost, and the cohort data prices it. The frozen community is anticipated because it is predictable, and the anticipated community is countered because the enemy prepares for the shape it knows is coming.

The freeze happens for a reason the commander should recognize. The winning maneuver worked, and the community trusts it; trust feels like strength, and the community mistakes the maneuver's past success for a guarantee of future success. The water doctrine's answer is that the maneuver's success was the product of the enemy it was used against, and a new enemy is a new ground. The river that trusts its last course arrives at the sea by whatever course the ground allows, and the community that trusts its last maneuver arrives at the next engagement already anticipated.

The Water Doctrine in One Table

The three commands of the water doctrine are read most quickly in comparison, and the table is the version a commander can keep with the moderation notes:

CommandThe actionThe failure modeThe doctrine's rule
Avoid what is strongRefuse the enemy's prepared argumentArguing with the prepared claim all dayThe strength is fixed; do not meet it
Strike what is weakAttack the undefended surfaceAttacking the defended positionThe weakness is everywhere the strength is not
Retain no constant shapeAdapt the maneuver to the enemyRepeating the maneuver that won last timeA new enemy is a new ground

The table is the water doctrine's anatomy. The first column names the command, the second the action, the third the failure, and the fourth the rule that holds the first three together. The community that works the table has made the water doctrine a method; the community that works only the first row has learned to refuse and nothing else, and the refusal without the strike is the evasiveness the objections section names.

The Water Doctrine and the Review Campaign

The water doctrine has a concrete shape in the review campaign, the engagement in which an enemy organizes a coordinated wave of negative reviews against a community's mod or map. The enemy's strength is the wave itself - the numbers, the screenshots, the coordinated timing - and a direct defense would meet the wave on its own ground, which is where the enemy is strongest. The water doctrine declines the ground.

The community's commander avoids the wave and strikes instead at what the enemy left undefended: the review pattern itself. The reviews that arrive in a coordinated surge, with similar wording, from accounts that have reviewed nothing else, are a pattern, and the pattern is the enemy's weakness. The community presents the pattern to the audience - the timestamps, the wording, the account histories - and the wave is no longer a verdict; it is a coordinated campaign caught in the act. The question changes from "is the mod bad" to "who organized these reviews," and the second question is the enemy's undefended ground. The water flowed past the wave and struck the pattern, and the pattern was the weakness the wave was meant to hide.

Reading the Weakness in the Enemy's Own Conduct

The water doctrine's first command is a discipline of reading as much as of action, and the reading deserves its own subsection because it is the skill the commander most often lacks. The enemy's weakness is not a secret; it is in the enemy's own conduct, and the commander who reads the conduct can name the weakness before any move is made. The reading has three subjects, and each is public. The enemy's history, which contains the contradictions between its present claims and its past ones. The enemy's commitments, which contain the promises it must keep and the ones it cannot. And the enemy's defensiveness, which contains the points it will not discuss - and the points an enemy will not discuss are the points where it is weakest.

Reading subjectWhere it is foundWhat it reveals
The enemy's historyIts changelogs, statements, and past disputesThe contradictions between past and present claims
The enemy's commitmentsIts announcements and promisesThe obligations it must keep and cannot
The enemy's defensivenessIts responses to its own criticsThe points it will not discuss, which are its weakest
The enemy's patternIts timestamps and review historyThe coordinated moves it meant to pass as organic

The table is the commander's reading aid, and it is worth keeping because the four subjects cover most of the weakness a community will ever need to find. The enemy that contradicts its own history, cannot keep its own commitments, and refuses its own critics has left its weaknesses on the public record, and the community that reads them has the water doctrine's map without a single covert step. The weakness is never manufactured and never found by spying; it is read, and the reading is the whole of the indirect method's intelligence work.

Invisible Evolution

The indirect method's most characteristic property is that its mechanism is invisible to the observer.

All men can see the tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

In the drama engagement, the tactics are the visible moves: the statement, the log, the screenshot, the archive. The strategy is the invisible arrangement of the battlefield that made those moves decisive: the ally cultivated months earlier, the record maintained before the dispute existed, the position chosen so that the enemy's own campaign would collapse against it. The observer sees the final swoop and credits the moment; the commander knows the swoop was decided by the slope, and the slope was built while no one was watching.

Critical warning

The indirect method is not the dishonest method. The boundary is the same boundary established in On Deception: the indirect maneuver may change the question, the ground, and the timing, but it must never falsify the record. An indirect campaign built on a manipulated log is a direct campaign wearing an indirect disguise, and it will be exposed by the first independent check. The cohort data records that indirect campaigns founded on fabricated evidence failed in 91% of cases, and the failure was the destruction of the community's official surface. The water doctrine flows over the rock of the true record; it does not dissolve it.

Documented example

The "Silt Line" group was accused in 2023 of borrowing animations from a rival without credit. The rival's claim was partially true: two animations were similar. A direct defense would have been a losing argument. Silt Line's commander instead made a single quiet move: the group published, unprompted, the full animation credits for its last three releases, including the two contested animations, with the references from which their motion studies had been drawn. The rival's campaign, which had expected a denial, was left arguing that Silt Line's honest credit was itself an admission. The community's verdict turned against the rival within a week, because the indirect move had converted the accusation into the accuser's overreach. Silt Line had not defended the two animations; it had dissolved the entire question of its credit discipline. See On Winning Without Fighting for the result that the maneuver was designed to produce.

The Visible Tactic and the Invisible Strategy

The distinction between the tactic and the strategy is the doctrine's deepest claim about the indirect method, and it is worth being exact about it. The tactic is what the observer sees: the statement, the log, the screenshot, the archive. The strategy is the arrangement that made the tactic decisive: the ally cultivated before the dispute, the record maintained before the accusation, the position chosen so that the enemy's own campaign collapses against it.

The observer credits the tactic because the strategy is invisible. The audience sees the Coldspring moderation log and thinks the log won; the commander knows the log won because it was maintained for two quarters before the accusation existed. The audience sees the Silt Line credits and thinks the credits won; the commander knows the credits won because the group's credit discipline had been genuine for years. The visible move is the tip of the strategy, and the observer mistakes the tip for the whole.

The Slope Built While No One Was Watching

The strategy's invisibility is not a matter of concealment; it is a matter of timing. The work that makes the indirect method decisive is done in the quiet season, before the engagement exists, when no one is watching and nothing seems to be at stake. The ally is cultivated when it is not needed; the record is maintained when no dispute exists; the position is built when the enemy has not yet chosen a ground.

The cohort data records this asymmetry as the indirect method's structural advantage. The community that has built its slope can execute an indirect maneuver in days; the community that has not must either build the slope first - and the window does not wait - or attempt the maneuver without it, which is the dishonest disguise the critical warning describes. The indirect method is not a trick that can be performed without preparation. It is the preparation, made visible for one instant.

The Failure Mode: The Method Without the Slope

The failure mode of the invisible method is the maneuver attempted without the slope, and it is the failure the critical warning names. A community that executes the indirect shape - the record release, the reframing, the changed surface - without the honest record underneath is executing a direct campaign in an indirect disguise, and the disguise is removed by the first independent check. The enemy does not have to defeat the maneuver; the enemy only has to check the record, and the check is the engagement's end.

The cohort records the cost precisely: indirect campaigns founded on fabricated evidence failed in 91% of cases, and the failure destroyed the community's official surface. The destruction is the reason the failure is the doctrine's worst. A direct defeat is a lost engagement; the exposed indirect campaign is a destroyed credibility, and the destroyed credibility is the slope that would have carried every future maneuver. The water doctrine flows over the rock of the true record; it does not dissolve it, and the community that tries to flow over a false record discovers that the false record is not a rock at all.

The Evolution That the Observer Misses

The invisibility of the strategy is the reason the observer miscredits the tactic, and the miscrediting is worth examining because it is the source of the most common misreading of the indirect method. The audience sees the Coldspring log and credits the log; it does not see the two quarters of quiet maintenance that made the log decisive. The audience sees the Silt Line credits and credits the credits; it does not see the years of genuine credit discipline that made the honest publication read as honesty rather than as a move.

The miscrediting matters because it produces a false lesson. The community that watches the indirect victory and learns "release the record" has learned the tactic without the strategy, and the tactic without the strategy is the empty maneuver: it releases a record it never maintained, and the record fails the first check. The true lesson is the invisible one - the record was maintained before the dispute existed - and the community that learns the visible lesson has learned the method's shape without its substance. The indirect method cannot be copied from its results, because its results are the visible tip of an invisible strategy, and the strategy is not visible in the result.

The Strategy the Commander Can Name

The invisibility of the strategy does not mean the strategy is unnamable; it means the strategy is invisible to the observer, not to the commander. The commander should be able to name, for every engagement the community has won, the invisible arrangement that made the victory possible: the ally cultivated months earlier, the record maintained before the dispute, the position chosen so that the enemy's campaign would collapse against it. The commander who cannot name the strategy has not executed one; the community won in spite of the commander, and the win will not repeat.

The discipline follows from the naming. The commander who can name the strategy can also build the next one: the arrangement is built in the quiet season, and the commander knows what to build because the naming shows what the last engagement needed. The commander who cannot name the strategy is reacting to engagements as they arrive, and the reactive commander is the opposite of the indirect commander: the reactive commander's moves are visible, because they are responses, and the responses are the visible tactics the enemy can prepare against. The invisible strategy is built by the commander who can say, in advance, what the battlefield will need.

Documented Example: The Review Pattern That Dissolved the Bomb

The doctrine is not a set of images but a set of habits, and habits are best shown in cases. The example below is a study in the water doctrine applied to the review bomb, and in the strike at the weakness the enemy left undefended.

Documented example

In 2022, a mapmaker's new map was hit on launch day by a coordinated wave of negative reviews. The reviews were numerous, similar in wording, and posted within a narrow window; to the audience, the map looked rejected. The mapmaker's commander declined the ground the wave had chosen. No argument was made with the reviews, and no claim was made about the map's quality. Instead, on the third day, the mapmaker published a single analysis of the wave itself: the timestamps of every negative review, the wording similarities across accounts, the account histories showing each reviewer had reviewed nothing else, and the contrast with the map's own playtest records and update changelog. The analysis did not defend the map; it documented the pattern. The audience's question changed from "is the map bad" to "who organized this," and the wave, exposed as a coordinated campaign, collapsed under the weight of its own pattern. The map's subsequent reviews returned to their normal distribution within a week. The water had flowed past the wave and struck the pattern, and the pattern was the weakness the wave was meant to hide.

The example rewards a careful reading, because every command of the water doctrine is present in it. The refusal was the decline of the ground: no argument with the reviews, on the reviews' own surface. The avoidance was the refusal to meet the wave's strength - the numbers and the timing - on its own terms. The strike was the analysis of the pattern: the timestamps, the wording, the account histories, which were the undefended surface the wave had not prepared. And the change of question was the result: the audience moved from judging the map to judging the campaign.

The example also shows the boundary working. The analysis fabricated nothing: the timestamps were real, the wording was quoted, the account histories were public. The maneuver changed what the audience made of the reviews - from verdict to pattern - and it changed nothing about the reviews themselves. The water doctrine flowed over the rock of the true record, and the record was the reviews' own timestamps and wording, which the wave itself had produced. The community that cannot find the weakness in the enemy's own record cannot execute this maneuver honestly, and the community that fabricates the pattern instead of documenting it has crossed the boundary and joined the 91%.

The cost is the same cost that runs through the whole doctrine, and it is worth stating because it is the part most often skipped. The mapmaker's analysis worked because the map had a history the analysis could rest on: the playtest records, the changelog, the normal review distribution. The map that had no history, and the community that had not maintained one, could not have produced the contrast the pattern needed. The indirect method's decisive moves are the products of the quiet season, and the community that skips the quiet season has spent the method's power before the engagement arrives.

The Indirect Campaign in the Server and the Workshop

The indirect method is not an abstraction, and the commander who wants to use it should be able to see its shapes on the surfaces the community actually occupies. The method adapts to the ground, and the ground is different on the Discord server, the Steam Workshop page, and the community forum.

The Server as the Indirect Surface

The Discord server is the community's own ground, and it is the natural home of the indirect method because it is the surface the community controls. The enemy's accusation arrives on the enemy's surface or in a shared space; the indirect campaign declines that ground and conducts itself on the server's own surfaces: the announcement channel, the pinned records, the moderation log, the appeal thread. The community that moves the engagement to its own ground has changed the audience, the rules, and the record in one maneuver.

The server also hosts the indirect method's subtler instruments. The server's structure is itself a statement: the channels that exist, the way rules are posted, the record of how questions are answered. The community that has arranged its server so that disputes are answered from the record has built an indirect position that requires no campaign to use. The enemy arrives, and the server's ordinary structure dissolves the accusation before a single statement is issued.

The Workshop Page as the Record

The Steam Workshop page is the community's permanent record, and it is the indirect method's most durable surface. The page's description, changelog, credits, and update history are the slope that the indirect maneuver rolls from. The accusation against a mod or a map is met not on the accusation's forum but on the page, where the record is already maintained and the audience is already present.

The workshop page makes the invisible strategy visible after the fact. The observer sees the community's response and credits the moment; the page shows the years of changelogs, the maintained credits, the documented decisions that made the response possible. The page is the strategy made public, and the community that keeps it current has built the slope that every indirect maneuver needs.

The Forum Thread as the Field the Community Declines

The forum thread is the enemy's chosen ground, and the indirect method's discipline is to decline it. The thread is where the enemy has prepared, where the debate can be dragged out, and where the community's every reply is a fragment the enemy can answer. The community that hurries to defend itself in the thread has accepted the enemy's position as the field, and the field favors the enemy.

The decline is not an absence; it is a relocation. The community that declines the thread and answers on its own surface has changed the field from the enemy's ground to its own. The thread then contains an accusation with no defender, which reads oddly; the community's own surface contains the record, the response, and the context, which reads decisively. The water did not fight the ground; it flowed around it, and arrived where the ground was weaker.

The Indirect Method and the Mod Team

The indirect method has a specific discipline for the mod team, where the community's force is small and its surface is official. The team that is accused does not defend itself member by member; it declines the debate and releases the record, the policy, and the context on its own surface, whole, at its chosen hour. The team's indirect method is the same as the faction's, with the stakes raised: the team's credibility is bound to its official voice, and every member who joins the debate has spent the team's credibility on a fragment.

The mod team's indirect campaign is also the discipline most likely to be mistaken for inaction, and the team's members will feel the pressure to answer. The doctrine's answer is the same as it is everywhere: the indirect method is not the absence of a response; it is the choice of the response's shape, surface, and timing. The team that holds its answer for the record release has not failed to respond. It has responded in the only shape that the team's credibility can survive.

The Indirect Method and the Mod Split

The indirect method is tested hardest in the mod split, where the community's own force is dividing at the moment the campaign is needed. A founder leaves and publishes an account of the split; the remaining team must respond, and every direct defense is met by the founder's version, exchange by exchange. The water doctrine declines the exchange. The team does not argue with the founder's account point by point; it publishes the record of the split's actual conduct - the decisions, the timetables, the documented reasons - on its own surface, and lets the founder's account meet the record.

The split is the engagement in which the indirect method and the boundary are tested together, because the temptation to manufacture the favorable record is strongest exactly when the record is most painful. The team that fabricates the record to win the split wins a week and loses the credibility the split is being fought over; the team that publishes the true record, even where it is unflattering, survives the check and holds its community. The cohort records the distinction: communities which published the true record through a split retained their membership at a materially higher rate than communities which fought the split directly or edited the record. The water flowed over the rock of the true record, and the split was the rock.

The Boundary of the Indirect Method

The indirect method has boundaries, and the commander who cannot state them cannot use the method safely. The boundaries are the same boundaries the doctrine draws everywhere: the method may change the question, the ground, and the timing, but it must never falsify the record, and it must never manufacture the appearance of support.

The Honest Frame

The indirect method changes what the audience makes of the truth; it does not change the truth. The community that frames a delay as care rather than failure has not lied about the delay; it has chosen the meaning the audience will attach to it. The community that frames a fix as an improvement rather than a concession has not hidden the concession; it has chosen the lens through which the concession will be seen.

The honest frame is the boundary that keeps the method inside the doctrine. A frame that survives the audience reading the record is honest; a frame that collapses the moment the record is read is a lie, and the lie converts the indirect method into the exposed campaign the critical warning describes. The commander who can tell the difference between managing attention and misrepresenting facts is the commander who can use the method without corrupting it.

The Manufactured Voice

The second boundary is the manufacture of the appearance of support. The indirect method may arrange for credible voices to speak, and it may not manufacture the appearance of credible voices. The planted review, the astroturfed support, the staged account that appears to agree with the community independently - these are fraud, and the community caught at them does not lose the engagement; it loses the credibility the method exists to preserve.

The distinction is the same distinction the cohort data records in the failure of fabricated campaigns. The community that coordinates real voices has extended its own force honestly; the community that manufactures voices has bought a credibility that the first check destroys. The indirect method's power depends on the audience's trust in the record, and the manufactured voice is the one maneuver that spends the trust the method runs on.

The Boundary in a Table

The commander can hold the boundary in a table, and the table is the version worth keeping with the moderation notes:

Indirect moveInside the boundaryOutside the boundary
The record releaseReleasing the true, complete recordReleasing a record that was edited to fit
The changed surfaceAnswering on the community's own surfaceRemoving or moderating the enemy's evidence
The reframed storyChoosing the honest frame for a true factMisdescribing the fact to fit the frame
The arranged voiceCoordinating genuine members and alliesPlanting reviews or astroturfing support
The silent refusalDeclining the enemy's exchangeConcealing a record the community is obliged to show

The table is the boundary made operational. Every row is a line the indirect method must not cross, and the line is the same in every row: the method may change what the audience makes of the truth, and it may not change the truth itself. The commander who works the table has the water doctrine's power without its corruption, and the method's invisibility without its fraud.

The Yamak Institute Cohort Data

The indirect doctrine of this article rests on the Yamak Institute's cohort research into the methods and outcomes of community conflict, which has tracked more than 1,800 documented drama engagements across the Unturned community since 2018. The research is longitudinal and comparative: engagements are logged with the method by which they were opened and the method by which they were decided, and outcomes are measured against the method. The primary records are presented below in the register in which the Institute publishes them.

The Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare (2021)

The flagship finding of the chapter, Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare (2021), records that indirect engagements in the Unturned community produced a favorable outcome for the initiator in 66% of cases, against 38% for engagements opened as direct confrontations. The differential has been consistent in every year of the cohort. The study is the chapter's empirical spine: it converts the doctrine's claim that the indirect method is the main instrument of victory from a judgment into a measurement.

The Cohort of the Repeated Maneuver (2022)

The Institute's 2022 cohort tracked the fate of the repeated maneuver. Communities which reused a successful indirect maneuver were anticipated and countered in 68% of subsequent engagements, and the counter was the direct product of the maneuver's visibility: the enemy had studied the previous engagement and prepared for its shape. The cohort is the empirical form of the water doctrine's third command: the maneuver that is repeated is no longer indirect, and the community that repeats it has chosen the finite method.

The Cohort of the Fabricated Campaign (2023)

The Institute's 2023 cohort tracked the boundary of the method. Indirect campaigns founded on fabricated evidence - edited logs, manufactured voices, doctored screenshots - failed in 91% of cases, and the failure destroyed the community's official surface. The cohort is the empirical form of the critical warning: the indirect method is not the dishonest method, and the community that crosses the boundary does not lose the engagement; it loses the credibility that the method runs on.

The Cohort of the Prepared Community (2023)

The complement of the fabricated campaign is the prepared community, and the Institute's cohort records its advantage. Communities with a documented pre-positioned official surface - a maintained record, a current archive, a standing policy - executed indirect maneuvers at a materially higher rate of success than communities that attempted the same maneuvers without the preparation. The cohort is the empirical form of the invisible strategy: the tactic is visible, and the slope that makes it decisive is built while no one is watching.

The Cohort of the Changed Question (2024)

The Institute's 2024 cohort tracked the mechanism of the indirect victory directly. Engagements decided by an indirect method were examined for the point at which the framing turned, and in 74% of decisive indirect engagements the turn came at the moment the question changed - the argument became evidence, the claim became the record, the verdict became the pattern - rather than at the moment the community's final statement was issued. The cohort is the empirical form of the changed question: it records that the indirect method's decisive move is the relocation of the question, and that the community's statement is the instrument of the relocation, not the result of it.

The Cohort in One Table

The Institute's primary records are read most quickly in summary, and the summary table is the reference a commander can keep with the moderation notes.

StudyYearPopulationPrincipal finding
Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare2021tracked engagementsIndirect openings won at 66%, direct openings at 38%
The cohort of the repeated maneuver2022tracked engagementsReused maneuvers were countered in 68% of subsequent engagements
The cohort of the fabricated campaign2023tracked engagementsFabricated indirect campaigns failed in 91% of cases
The cohort of the prepared community2023tracked engagementsPre-positioned surfaces succeeded at a materially higher rate
The cohort of the changed question2024decisive engagementsThe framing turned at the change of question in 74% of decisive indirect wins

The table makes the chapter's indirect claims portable. The 66% and 38% are the method's premium; the 68% is the price of repetition; the 91% is the cost of the boundary crossed; the prepared community's advantage is the invisible strategy's price; and the 74% is the changed question's mechanism. The commander who carries the table carries the chapter's empirical spine in five rows.

The Five-Stage Protocol for the Indirect Campaign

The doctrine of this article is operational, and the Institute's field manual reduces it to a five-stage protocol that a community manager executes when an engagement calls for the indirect method. Each stage has a verification step, and the protocol is designed to be run in the order the doctrine presents: the reading of the enemy first, the choice of the ground second, the method third, the strike fourth, and the closing last.

Stage 1: Read the Enemy's Strength and Weakness

Map the opposing camp's position before any move is made. Where is the enemy's strength - the prepared argument, the defended reputation, the documented claim? Where is the enemy's weakness - the contradiction, the neglected ally, the commitment it cannot keep? The verification step is the map test: the commander can name, in one sentence each, the enemy's strongest point and the point it has left undefended. A community that passes Stage 1 has the water doctrine's map; a community that fails it will attack the enemy's strength and meet the enemy's preparation.

Stage 2: Choose the Ground

Decide where the engagement will be fought. The indirect method does not accept the enemy's ground; it selects its own: the community's official surface, the archive, the alliance network, the documented record. The verification step is the ground test: the commander can state, in one sentence, why the chosen surface favors the community and the ground the community has declined. A community that passes Stage 2 has relocated the field; a community that fails it has accepted the enemy's field and the enemy's advantage.

Stage 3: Select the Maneuver

Choose the single indirect maneuver the ground makes available, and do not repeat the maneuver that won the last engagement. The maneuver is the relation between the enemy's expectation and the community's move: the record release, the changed surface, the chosen timing, the reframed story, the silent refusal. The verification step is the novelty test: the maneuver is one the enemy has not seen and has not prepared for. A community that passes Stage 3 has an indirect move; a community that fails it has a repeated one, and the repeat is the 68%.

Stage 4: Strike the Weak Point

Execute the maneuver against the enemy's undefended surface, whole, at the community's chosen hour. The strike does not argue with the enemy's strength; it flows to the weakness and changes the question. The verification step is the boundary test: the maneuver survives the first independent check of the record. A community that passes Stage 4 has struck where the defense is absent; a community that fails it has crossed the boundary, and the crossing is the 91%.

Stage 5: Close and Do Not Overreach

Close the engagement cleanly when the ground has changed, and do not press the victory into a punishment. The indirect campaign's result is the changed question, and the community that pursues the enemy past the changed question has converted its victory into the enemy's recruiting material. The verification step is the closing test: the community can state, one sentence, what the ground was and how it changed. A community that passes Stage 5 has used the indirect method to win; a community that fails it has won the question and lost the campaign.

The Protocol Against the Immediate Temptation

The protocol's most important discipline is the one the five stages cannot show, and it deserves its own note: the refusal of the immediate response. Every indirect campaign begins as a temptation to answer directly - the accusation is loud, the members are angry, and the enemy has prepared for the direct answer. The protocol's first stage is the antidote to the temptation, because the map of the enemy's strength and weakness cannot be drawn in the hour of anger, and the ground cannot be chosen by the community that has already run to the enemy's thread.

The commander who cannot hold the protocol's order will fail it in a specific way. The community that answers the accusation immediately has answered before the enemy was read, before the ground was chosen, and before the maneuver was selected; it has executed Stage 4 without Stages 1 through 3, and the strike has landed on the enemy's prepared strength. The cohort records the pattern as the most common cause of indirect campaigns failing: the community knew the method and could not hold its own impatience long enough to use it. The protocol is a sequence for a reason, and the reason is that each stage makes the next one possible.

The Protocol in One Page

The five stages are read most quickly in summary, and the summary table is the version a community manager can keep with the moderation notes.

StageThe actionThe verificationThe exit condition
1. Read the enemyMap the strength and the weaknessThe map testPass when both are named in a sentence each
2. Choose the groundSelect the community's surface, decline the enemy'sThe ground testPass when the chosen surface is stated and justified

4. Strike the weak pointExecute the move against the undefended surfaceThe boundary testPass when the move survives the first check
5. Close and do not overreachClose when the ground has changedThe closing testPass when the change of ground is stated

The one-page protocol is the chapter's operational core, and the community that works it in order has run the water doctrine as a method. The community that works it in any other order - striking before the enemy is read, repeating the spent maneuver, crossing the boundary - is the community the cohort records as the anticipated or the fabricated campaign, and the record is the price of the order.

Objections

The indirect doctrine meets resistance, and the resistance is predictable enough to be answered in advance. The objections below are the twelve most common raised by community managers who have been asked to decline the enemy's ground and strike the enemy's weakness. Each is answered in the doctrine's voice.

Objection 1: "Declining the enemy's thread looks like weakness."

The doctrine's answer is that the decline reads as weakness only when it is conducted as weakness. The community that declines the enemy's ground and answers on its own surface, with the record and the context, has not declined to answer; it has declined to answer on the enemy's terms. The audience watches both surfaces: the enemy's thread contains an accusation with no defender, and the community's surface contains the record, whole. The cohort data records that the community which relocated the ground resolved the engagement at a materially higher rate than the community which defended itself in the enemy's thread, because the relocated ground is the ground the community controls.

Objection 2: "The indirect method sounds like manipulation."

The doctrine's answer is the boundary: the indirect method is the management of attention, not the misrepresentation of facts. The record release, the changed surface, the chosen timing, and the reframe change what the audience makes of the truth; they do not change the truth. The doctrine is explicit that a community caught manufacturing the appearance of support loses the credibility the method exists to preserve, and the cohort records the loss at 91%. The objector has confused the method's subtlety with its dishonesty, and the confusion is the exact confusion the doctrine warns against.

Objection 3: "We do not have time to build the slope before the campaign."

The doctrine's answer is that the slope is built in the quiet season, and the quiet season is the only season in which the indirect method can be prepared. The ally cultivated before the dispute, the record maintained before the accusation, the position built before the enemy chose its ground - each is the work of peacetime, and each is invisible when it works. The community that has not built the slope cannot execute the indirect method honestly; it can only attempt the disguise, and the disguise is the 91%. The objector who has no time to build the slope has described the condition the doctrine treats as the whole reason for the quiet season.

Objection 4: "Our enemy is too strong for the indirect method."

The doctrine's answer is that the enemy's strength is exactly what the indirect method avoids. The method does not meet the enemy's strength; it flows around it and strikes the undefended surface. The strong enemy has prepared its position and has therefore committed its expectations, and the commitments are the weaknesses: the ally it neglected, the history it cannot defend, the promise it cannot keep. The stronger the enemy's prepared position, the more of its surface is left undefended, because the strength was bought with the preparation's concentration. The indirect method was written for the outmatched, and the strong enemy is its natural prey.

Objection 5: "We already tried an indirect move and it did not work."

The doctrine's answer is that the failed move is evidence about the method's execution, not about the method. The indirect move fails when the enemy was not read, when the ground was not chosen, when the maneuver was the repeated one, or when the boundary was crossed. The cohort data records each failure as a specific condition: the anticipated maneuver, the fabricated campaign, the unprepared community. The objector who has tried one indirect move and failed has tested one relation between one enemy and one move, and the method's inexhaustibility is the guarantee that the next relation is available.

Objection 6: "The direct method is more honest."

The doctrine's answer is that honesty is a property of the record, not of the method. The direct statement can be dishonest, and the indirect maneuver can be honest: the direct campaign that fabricates a denial is dishonest, and the indirect campaign that releases the true record is honest. The doctrine's boundary is the same for both methods - the record must not be falsified - and the method is chosen by the ground, not by the honesty. The objector who identifies the method with the virtue has confused the shape of the move with the truth of the record, and the truth of the record is the only standard the doctrine holds.

Objection 7: "The indirect method only works for established communities."

The doctrine concedes the point and prices it. The prepared community has the slope - the record, the allies, the surface - that the indirect method rolls from, and the new community has level ground. The doctrine's counsel to the new community is the same as its counsel to the old: build the slope first, and the method becomes available as the slope grows. The new community that begins the quiet-season work on its first day will arrive at its first engagement with the surface, the record, and the allies the method needs; the old community that neglected its slope has level ground too. The doctrine rewards the preparation, not the age.

Objection 8: "If everyone uses the indirect method, no one will ever argue directly."

The doctrine's answer is that the two methods are not rivals; they are the circle. The direct method joins the battle, and the indirect method secures the victory, and the commander who refuses the indirect because everyone might use it has refused the method of winning because it is popular. The indirect method does not replace the direct; it is what makes the direct decisive, and the circle alternates the two without end. The community that resolves to argue everything directly has chosen the finite method and abandoned the infinite one, and the cohort records the choice's price: the direct-only community wins fewer engagements than the community that works the circle.

Objection 9: "We cannot read the enemy's weakness; the enemy is too opaque."

The doctrine's answer is that the enemy's weakness is in its public record, and the public record is available to any commander who will read it. The enemy's schedule is in its timestamps, its commitments in its announcements, its contradictions in its own history, its defensiveness in its response to its critics. Reading the enemy is not spying; it is attention to public behavior, and the attention is the whole of the indirect method's first stage. The objector who cannot read the enemy has chosen not to look, and the doctrine has no remedy for a choice made in advance of the engagement.

Objection 10: "The indirect method makes our community look evasive."

The doctrine's answer is that the community looks evasive when it is always indirect, and the failure is the balance, not the method. The community that declines every exchange, frames every statement, and never says anything outright accumulates the reputation the objection describes, and the reputation costs it the direct method's credibility when the direct is finally required. The doctrine's answer is the circle: the community that works the ring is direct when the direct is required and indirect when the indirect is decisive, and the audience reads the alternation as method, not as evasion. The evasive community has stopped alternating; the disciplined community has not.

Objection 11: "Striking the enemy's weakness feels like attacking the vulnerable."

The doctrine's answer is that the strike at the weakness is a strike at the undefended, not at the defenseless. The weakness is the aspect of the enemy's position the enemy chose not to defend - the contradiction in its own record, the commitment it cannot keep - and the strike is the presentation of that aspect to the audience. The strike does not fabricate the weakness and does not enlarge it; it presents what the enemy left on the record. The cohort records that the strike at the undefended surface is the engagement's most frequent decisive move, and that its success is the product of the enemy's own record, not of the community's invention.

Objection 12: "The indirect method is just the direct method delayed."

The doctrine's answer is the whole of this article. The indirect method does not delay the direct; it replaces the direct's target. The direct method meets the enemy's strength; the indirect method avoids the strength and strikes the weakness, and the avoidance and the strike are the method, not a delay of the method. The Coldspring log did not delay a debate; it dissolved the debate. The Silt Line credits did not postpone a denial; they eliminated the question the denial would have answered. The objector has mistaken the method's shape for its schedule, and the method's shape is the subject of this article.

Objection 13: "Changing the question sounds like dodging the accusation."

The doctrine's answer is that the change of question is not the avoidance of the accusation; it is the relocation of the accusation onto the ground where it can actually be decided. The accusation about a community's conduct is decided by the community's record, not by the accusation's framing; the community that moves the question from "does the accusation sound convincing" to "does the record support it" has not dodged the accusation. It has brought the accusation to the evidence. The cohort of the changed question records that the framing turned at the change of question in 74% of decisive indirect wins - the change is not a dodge; it is the mechanism of the decision. The dodge is the accusation that never meets the record, and the community that brings every accusation to the record has made dodging impossible.

Objection 14: "We cannot release the record; parts of it embarrass us."

The doctrine's answer is that the embarrassing record is the community's own, and the community's choice is between releasing it and being caught withholding it. The cohort records that the community which released the true record - including its unflattering parts - survived the check and held its credibility, while the community which released the edited record was exposed by the first independent check and destroyed its official surface. The embarrassing fact, released honestly, reads as candor and is absorbed; the embarrassing fact, concealed, reads as guilt and is found. The water doctrine flows over the rock of the true record; the record is the rock whether the community likes its shape or not.

Objection 15: "The indirect method only works on public, documented enemies."

The doctrine's answer is that the method adapts to the enemy's visibility, and the invisible enemy is itself a weakness the method can strike. An enemy that operates without a public record - anonymous accounts, unverifiable claims, no history to check - has left undefended its own credibility: the audience cannot verify the enemy's claims because the enemy has no record to verify, and the inability is the weakness. The community's response is not to argue with the unverifiable claim; it is to point to the absence - the claim is unverifiable, the account is anonymous, the pattern is uncheckable - and to let the audience weigh the claim's surface against the community's own documented record. The invisible enemy's strength is its invisibility, and its weakness is that the invisibility is visible too.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between the direct and the indirect method?

A: The direct method is the method of joining battle; the indirect method is the method of winning it. The direct method meets the enemy's strength where the enemy arranged to meet it - the statement against statement, the claim against counterclaim. The indirect method avoids the strength and strikes the weakness: it changes the ground, the timing, the audience, or the question. The two are not rivals; they are the circle, and the commander works both, because the direct joins the battle the indirect is used to win.

Q: Why is the indirect method inexhaustible?

A: Because it is defined against the enemy's expectation rather than by any fixed form. The direct method has a finite set of moves, and the enemy can prepare for each; the indirect method is the relation between the community's move and the enemy's expectation, and every new expectation is a new maneuver waiting to be made. The image of the five notes is exact: five notes produce more melodies than can ever be heard, and the enemy's expectations produce more indirect moves than the community will ever need.

Q: How does the water doctrine work in a community dispute?

A: The water doctrine has two commands. Avoid what is strong: do not argue with the accusation on the accusation's prepared ground. Strike what is weak: attack the enemy's undefended surface - the contradiction in its record, the ally it neglected, the commitment it cannot keep. And retain no constant shape: adapt the maneuver to the enemy, and never repeat the move that won the last engagement. The community that works the three commands has made the indirect method a method rather than a trick.

Q: What is the difference between the indirect method and deception?

A: The indirect method is the management of attention; deception is the misrepresentation of facts. The indirect move may change what the audience makes of the truth - the question, the ground, the timing, the frame - but it must never change the truth itself. The record release must be a true record; the reframe must be an honest frame; the arranged voice must be a genuine voice. The Institute's cohort records the boundary's price: fabricated indirect campaigns failed in 91% of cases, and the failure destroyed the community's official surface.

Q: Why should the community decline the enemy's thread?

A: Because the enemy's thread is the enemy's ground, and the ground favors the enemy. The thread is where the enemy has prepared, where the debate can be dragged out, and where the community's every reply is a fragment the enemy can answer. The community that declines the thread and answers on its own surface has changed the field from the enemy's ground to its own, and the field is the engagement's first decision. The Coldspring server declined the debate and released the log; the accusers, who had prepared for a debate, were left arguing against two years of published data.

Q: What does it mean to strike the enemy's weak point?

A: It means to attack the aspect of the enemy's position it did not prepare, because it did not expect to be attacked there. The enemy defends the accusation it prepared; it does not defend its own history, its own commitments, or its own archive. The strike presents the undefended aspect to the audience - the contradiction, the neglected ally, the commitment that cannot be kept - and the presentation is the engagement's decisive move. The weakness is not fabricated; it is found in the enemy's own record.

Q: How does the indirect method apply to a mod team?

A: The mod team that is accused does not defend itself member by member; it declines the debate and releases the record, the policy, and the context on its own surface, whole, at its chosen hour. The team's credibility is bound to its official voice, and every member who joins the debate has spent the team's credibility on a fragment. The team's indirect campaign is the discipline most likely to be mistaken for inaction, and the doctrine's answer is the same as everywhere: the indirect method is not the absence of a response; it is the choice of the response's shape, surface, and timing.

Q: What is the relationship between this article and the one before it?

A: On Momentum supplied the energy and timing that this article spends. Momentum is the accumulated force and the well-timed release; the indirect method is the shape the release takes when the enemy's strength must be avoided. The crossbow is bent in the quiet season, and the water doctrine decides where the bolt travels. The two articles are the two halves of the same instrument - the momentum is the force, and the indirect method is the method of its application.

Q: How does the indirect method relate to the direct approach that follows?

A: This article develops the indirect method to its fullest expression, and On the Direct Approach develops the method of joining battle. The circle binds them: the indirect method prepares the ground, and the direct approach delivers the decision against the weak point the indirect method located. The commander who reads both articles carries the whole tactical doctrine - the indirect to secure the victory, and the direct to join the battle the victory concludes.

Q: What if the enemy has prepared for the indirect method too?

A: Then the enemy has committed its expectations, and the commitments are weaknesses. An enemy that has prepared for the record release is exposed to the changed surface; an enemy that has prepared for the changed surface is exposed to the chosen timing; an enemy that has prepared for the timing is exposed to the silent refusal. The enemy can prepare against one method, and the preparation is exposure to the other - the circle's whole premise. The commander who works the ring keeps the enemy behind its own preparations, because preparation against one method is exposure to the other.

Q: How should a community read its own indirect habits?

A: The community should audit the maneuvers it has used and ask which ones it has repeated. The repeated maneuver is the exhausted repertoire, and the cohort records its price: reused maneuvers were countered in 68% of subsequent engagements. The community should also audit the boundary - has every indirect move survived the first independent check of the record? - and the balance - has the community become always indirect, or does it work the circle? The audit is the water doctrine's self-application, and the community that runs it has retained no constant shape.

Q: Can a new community use the indirect method at all?

A: It can use the method's shapes, and it must build the slope they roll from. The new community has no record, no allies, and no surface to change the engagement to, so its indirect moves are limited to the honest frame and the chosen timing - and it must build the rest. The doctrine's counsel is the same as everywhere: begin the quiet-season work on the first day, so that the record, the surface, and the allies exist when the first engagement arrives. The indirect method is not closed to the new community; it is the reward for the preparation, and the preparation is available from day one.

Q: What happens when an indirect campaign succeeds?

A: The campaign's success is the changed question, and the engagement should be closed when the question has changed. The community that presses its victory into a punishment - demanding a public surrender, a formal apology, or a ritual humiliation - has converted its win into the enemy's recruiting material, and the cohort records the cost. The discipline of the close is the same as the discipline of the method: the community states what the ground was and how it changed, returns to the record, and lets the audience draw the conclusion the changed question has already made available. The indirect method's victory is the audience's conclusion, and the conclusion is not improved by the victor's insistence.

Q: How is this article's method related to winning without fighting?

A: The indirect method is the instrument by which On Winning Without Fighting is achieved. The indirect campaign does not destroy the enemy; it changes the question, and the changed question is often the enemy's own collapse - the campaign that dissolves against the record never requires the enemy's defeat, because the enemy's position is emptied rather than fought. The Silt Line example is the relation in miniature: the group did not defeat the rival; it dissolved the question, and the rival's campaign died of its own overreach. The indirect method is the method of winning without fighting, and the reader who wants the fullest expression of the result should continue to that article.

Q: When should a community refuse the indirect method and fight directly?

A: When the ground is already the community's own and the enemy's weakness is already exposed. The direct approach is the method of joining battle, and it is correct when the indirect method has done its work: the weak point is located, the ground is changed, and the question is the community's. The commander who fights directly without the indirect preparation is meeting the enemy's strength unprepared; the commander who fights directly after the preparation is delivering the decision. On the Direct Approach is the fullest statement of when the direct becomes correct, and it is the next article in this section.

Q: What is the relationship between the indirect method and the community's record?

A: The record is the method's foundation and its boundary in one. As the foundation, the record is the slope the method rolls from: the indirect move is decisive only when the record behind it is true, current, and the community's own. As the boundary, the record is the line the method must not cross: the move that falsifies the record has left the doctrine entirely. The cohort records both halves of the relation - the prepared community's advantage and the fabricated campaign's 91% failure - and the two halves are one fact: the indirect method is the record, made to decide the question it was maintained to answer.

Appendix A: The Indirect Reference

The indirect doctrine is read most quickly as a reference table, and the table is the version a community manager can keep with the moderation notes.

InstrumentWhat it governsThe doctrine's rule
The enemy's mapWhere the engagement can be wonName the strength and the weakness in a sentence each
The chosen groundWhere the engagement is foughtDecline the enemy's surface, answer on the community's
The water's commandsHow the move is shapedAvoid the strong, strike the weak, retain no shape
The circleHow the methods alternateKeep the ring unreadable, work both methods
The invisible strategyWhat makes the tactic decisiveBuild the slope in the quiet season
The boundaryWhat the method may not doChange the audience's reading, never the truth
The repeated maneuverThe method's failureThe tactic that won last time is anticipated
The closeWhen the engagement endsClose when the ground has changed, do not overreach

The table is the indirect doctrine's operational core, and each row is a discipline the community practices. The community that works the table has made the enemy's map, the chosen ground, the water's commands, and the boundary its own instruments, and the instruments are the chapter's whole practical content.

Appendix B: The Complete Indirect Chain

The chapter's full argument, laid out as the chain the doctrine follows from the reading of the enemy to the changed question.

The chain is read left to right as a single engagement and top to bottom as the community's whole career. The enemy's expectation produces the map; the strength and the weakness are located; the ground is chosen; the maneuver flows past the strength and strikes the weakness; the question is changed; the record survives the check; the engagement is closed; and the chain returns to the next enemy's expectation, because the indirect method is a cycle and not an event. A community that works the chain in order has avoided the enemy's strength, struck the enemy's weakness, and changed the question; a community that works it in any other order - meeting the strength, repeating the maneuver, crossing the boundary - is the community the cohort records as the anticipated or the fabricated campaign, and the record is the price of the order.

Summary

The indirect method is the main instrument of victory in the drama engagement. It is inexhaustible because it is defined against the enemy's expectation; it is fluid because it adapts to the enemy's shape; it is invisible because its mechanism is the arrangement of the battlefield, not the final move. The commander who works the circle, avoids the enemy's strength, strikes the enemy's weakness, and never repeats the spent maneuver holds an advantage that the direct confrontation cannot meet.
