On the Direct Approach

The indirect method is the engine of victory, but it is not the whole of the doctrine. There are engagements that must be joined directly, and there is a method by which the direct engagement is fought. The fifth chapter's opening sentence states the division with complete precision, and the precision is the key to the entire article: the direct method is the method of joining battle, and the indirect method is the method of securing victory. The direct approach does not replace the indirect; it is what the indirect makes possible.

In all fighting, the direct method may be used for joining battle, but indirect methods will be needed in order to secure victory.

  • The willingness to commit the community's whole visible force to a single position, issued by a single voice
  • Experience, direct or observed, with at least one engagement in which a statement settled the matter and a statement failed to

The Function of the Direct Approach

The direct approach is the visible engagement: the statement that names the opponent, the position that is staked publicly, the challenge that is offered. It is the method of contact, and it is required whenever the campaign has reached the point at which the two camps must meet. The Yamak Institute's cohort data, which has tracked more than 1,800 documented drama engagements across the Unturned community since 2018, records that engagements resolved by a clean direct confrontation - where the community had first completed the indirect preparation - produced a favorable outcome for the prepared community in 71% of cases. The direct approach is not a failure of the doctrine. It is the doctrine's instrument of decision.

The Method of Contact

The direct approach is the method of contact because it is the only method by which the two camps actually meet. The indirect method changes the ground, the timing, the audience, and the question, but it does not declare the meeting; the direct approach declares it. The statement that names the opponent, the position staked publicly, the challenge offered - these are the visible acts by which the community says, in public, what it holds and against whom.

The direct approach is therefore required at the end of every campaign that the indirect method has prepared. The indirect method locates the weak point and changes the ground; the direct approach delivers the decision on that ground. The community that completes the indirect preparation and then refuses the direct declaration has done the work of the engagement and withheld its result: the weak point is exposed, and the community declines to strike it. The cohort data records the pattern - the prepared community that refused the direct decision resolved its engagements at a materially lower rate than the prepared community that took the decision - because the audience waits for the declaration, and the declaration is the meeting.

The Direct Is Not the Simpler Method

The direct approach is commonly mistaken for the simpler method, and the mistake is worth correcting before the doctrine is stated, because it produces the wrong discipline. The direct method is the method of the visible engagement, and the visible engagement is the most exposed surface the community has. The statement that names the opponent is quoted, checked, and held against the community for years; the position staked publicly is a commitment the community must keep; the challenge offered is an invitation to be met.

The direct approach is therefore the method that most rewards preparation, not the method that least requires it. The indirect method can be attempted with nothing - though it fails - because its moves are invisible until they work. The direct method cannot be attempted with nothing at all, because its moves are visible the moment they are made, and the empty direct statement is exposed immediately. The community that mistakes the direct approach for the easy method arrives at the engagement unprepared, and the unprepared direct engagement is the engagement the cohort records as the clean defeat.

When the Direct Is Required

The direct approach is required in a recognizable set of conditions, and the commander who can name the conditions can name the moment. The direct approach is required when the campaign has reached the point of decision - the weak point located, the ground changed, the audience attending - and the meeting can no longer be declined. It is required when the accusation is such that silence reads as concession, and the indirect alternatives have been spent. And it is required when the community's own position demands to be stated plainly, because the position is the community's and the community must own it.

The conditions share one property: in each, the community's choice is not whether to engage but how. The direct approach is the method of the engagement that cannot be avoided, and the discipline of the method is the discipline of the unavoidable engagement: it will be joined, and the only question is whether it is joined prepared or joined empty. The commander who reads the conditions has read the moment at which the indirect preparation is complete, and the preparation's whole purpose is the direct engagement it makes possible.

The Direct Engagement in One Table

The direct approach's doctrine can be read as a single comparison, and the table is the version a commander can keep beside the moderation notes:

ElementThe unprepared direct engagementThe prepared direct engagement
The targetThe enemy's strongest claimThe enemy's undefended point
The groundThe enemy's surfaceThe community's own surface
The voiceTwo or more signalsThe single signal
The forceThe assault of the antsThe grindstone
The closeThe win pressed into a punishmentThe decision, closed cleanly
The outcomeThe clean defeatThe 71% decision

The table is the doctrine in six rows. The left column is the direct engagement fought as the ants fight - meeting the strength, on the enemy's ground, with a divided voice - and the right column is the direct engagement fought as the grindstone is dashed against the egg. The community that reads the table and can tell which column its planned engagement occupies has done most of the doctrine's work before the statement is drafted.

The Direct Engagement in the Drama War

The direct approach has a specific shape in the sustained drama war, where the community faces not a single accusation but a campaign of them, and the direct engagement is not one statement but the series of statements by which the community holds its position across the campaign. The single direct engagement is the decision of one exchange; the direct engagement in the drama war is the discipline by which each exchange is joined and closed, and the campaign is the sequence of closes.

The drama war changes the direct approach's emphasis without changing its method. The community that must hold a line across a campaign cannot afford the divided voice in any exchange, because the seam struck in one exchange is carried into the next; the community that closes each exchange cleanly carries the record of the closes into the campaign's end. The direct approach in the drama war is the same grindstone, delivered exchange by exchange, and the campaign is won by the community that delivers it without once breaking the line. The reader who wants the fullest treatment of the sustained war should see The Statement War, which is the direct engagement extended across time.

The Control of the Force

The direct engagement is a test of organization, and the fifth chapter opens with the principle of the organized force.

The control of a large force is the same principle as the control of a few men: it is merely a question of dividing up their numbers.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

Fighting with a large army under your command is nowise different from fighting with a small one: it is merely a question of instituting signs and signals.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

In the drama engagement, the direct approach is fought with the community's entire visible force, and the force must be controllable. The community of hundreds is controlled by the same principle as the community of five: the division of the members into roles, and the signals by which the commander directs them. The signal is the official statement, and the discipline of the direct engagement is that there is exactly one signal. The community that enters a direct engagement and issues two signals - two official positions, two spokespeople, two statements of intent - has divided its own force, and the enemy will strike the seam.

Common mistake

Fighting the direct engagement through multiple channels with different messages. The cohort data records that communities which issued conflicting statements from different official voices lost direct engagements in 74% of cases, because the conflict itself became the story. The direct approach is a single position, issued by a single voice, on a single surface. Every member of the community holds the same line, and the opposing camp is denied the seam. See The Drama Commander for the virtue of strictness that enforces the single signal.

Dividing Up Their Numbers

The control of the large force is the control of the few because the large force is divided into parts, and each part is controlled by the same discipline as the whole. The community of hundreds does not enter the direct engagement as a hundred voices; it enters as a hundred members each holding a small, named part of the single position. One maintains the record, one drafts, one verifies, one coordinates the allies, one holds the channels - and the parts are divided before the engagement, in the quiet season, so that the division exists when the statement is required.

The division is the direct engagement's first test, and it is a test the community can fail in the hour of the engagement. The community that has never divided its labor discovers, at the moment of the statement, that every member wants to be the voice, and the discovery produces the two-signal failure the doctrine warns against. The community that has divided its labor in peacetime enters the engagement with the parts already named, and the single signal directs them. The direct approach is the visible act of an organization, and the organization is the division made before the engagement existed.

Signs and Signals

The division is directed by signals, and the signal discipline of the direct engagement is that there is exactly one signal. The signal is the official statement, and it is the community's whole voice at the moment of the release. The members do not each produce a signal; they each execute their part when the single signal is given, and the combined execution is the community's visible position, held in every channel at once.

The single signal is the direct engagement's most demanding discipline, because it asks the community to be visible and silent at once: visible in the statement, silent in the members. The community that cannot hold the single signal will produce the direct engagement's most recognizable failure - the statement posted, and then a dozen members each elaborating on it in their own words, each slightly out of step, each giving the opposing camp a seam to strike. The cohort records the seam as the direct engagement's most common cause of defeat: the statement was right, and the community could not hold the line behind it.

The Single Voice in the Mod Team

The single voice has a specific discipline for the mod team, where the community's official voice is the team's own and the stakes of a divided signal are highest. The team that enters a direct engagement and lets each moderator post their own version of the position has produced as many signals as there are moderators, and the enemy will quote the loosest one. The team's discipline is the same as the community's, with the stakes raised: the position is consolidated in private, the statement is issued by the team's official voice, and every moderator holds the line in the channels they occupy.

The mod team's single voice is also the discipline most likely to be broken from inside, because the moderators are the community's most active members and the most tempted to elaborate. The doctrine's answer is the standing reference: the official statement is the position, and the moderators answer every question by reference to it, without adding to it. The moderator who adds to the statement has issued a second signal, and the second signal is the seam. The team that cannot hold its moderators to the single voice has already failed the direct engagement before the statement is posted.

The Cost of the Two Signals

The cost of the divided force is precise, and the doctrine prices it so that the commander will take the discipline seriously. The community that issues two signals has divided its own force, and the enemy will strike the seam: the accusation is answered, and the community's own second signal becomes the enemy's evidence. The cohort data records that communities which issued conflicting statements from different official voices lost direct engagements in 74% of cases - a rate the unprepared community does not approach - because the conflict itself became the story, and the original accusation was forgotten in the more interesting conflict of the community arguing with itself.

The two-signal cost is paid in a specific currency: the community's credibility. The audience that watches a community contradict itself in the middle of its own defense does not conclude that the community has two honest views; it concludes that the community does not know its own position. The single signal is the evidence that the community knows what it holds, and the evidence is the direct engagement's foundation. The community that cannot produce it has lost the engagement's most important ground before the enemy has argued a word.

The Division in a Discord Server

The division of the force has a concrete shape in a Discord server, and the commander who can see it has an advantage. The shape has a center and spokes: the center is the official channel, where the single statement is issued and the record is held; the spokes are the members who carry the statement into the server's other channels, and into the other servers, forums, and platforms where the audience is. When the statement is issued, the center releases it and the spokes hold the line in their rooms.

The failure of the division in a Discord server is the collapse of the spokes into the center. A community whose members all gather in the official channel, posting their agreement and elaborating on the statement, has made itself visible in one room and left the rest of the field to the enemy. The direct engagement is decided where the audience is, and the audience is not only in the official channel. The spokes must stay in the rooms where the audience is, holding the single line, while the center holds the record - and the division that keeps the spokes in the rooms is the same division that delivers the grindstone whole.

The Direct Statement and the Record

The direct statement is not the whole of the direct engagement; the record is the engagement's substance, and the statement is its surface. The community that issues a brilliant statement over an absent record has issued a brilliant surface over nothing; the community that issues a plain statement over a maintained record has issued the grindstone. The cohort data records the asymmetry in every year of its tracking: the decisive direct statement was decisive because of the record it rested on, and the record was the community's accumulated conduct, maintained in the quiet season.

The relation between the statement and the record is the relation between the trigger and the crossbow, stated in the direct doctrine's own terms. The statement releases the engagement; the record supplies the force that the release spends. The community that writes its statement as though the statement were the whole engagement has written a statement that will be answered; the community that writes its statement as the surface of its record has written the statement that answers. The direct approach's discipline is therefore not only the discipline of the statement but the discipline of the record the statement is issued over, and the record is the quieter half of the doctrine.

The Grindstone and the Egg

The fifth chapter states the standard of impact for the direct engagement in the image of the grindstone and the egg.

To ensure that your whole host may withstand the brunt of the enemy's attack and remain unshaken, this is effected by maneuvers direct and indirect.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

That the impact of your army may be like a grindstone dashed against an egg, this is effected by the science of weak points and strong.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 5, Energy

The grindstone is dashed against an egg, not against another grindstone. The direct approach is not the meeting of two equal forces; it is the delivery of the community's whole weight against the enemy's weak point, which the indirect method has already located and exposed. The science of weak points and strong is the bridge between the two methods: the indirect approach finds the weak point, and the direct approach delivers the grindstone to it.

Documented example

The "Foundry" studio was defamed in 2021 by a rival that published a distorted account of a licensing dispute. The distortion had a single weak point: the rival's own public announcement of the dispute, published two months earlier, contradicted the distorted account on the central fact. Foundry's commander located the weak point through the rival's own archive and then fought the engagement directly. The official statement did not argue the distortion point by point; it presented the rival's two statements side by side, with dates. The grindstone was the contradiction, and the egg was the rival's credibility. The engagement was over within 72 hours. The direct approach had been decisive precisely because the weak point had been located by the indirect preparation. See On the Indirect Approach for the location of the weak point.

The Grindstone Is the Whole Weight

The grindstone is the community's whole weight, and the whole weight is the product of the division and the signal. The community that enters the direct engagement with a divided force has delivered a collection of stones, each small, each meeting the enemy separately; the community that enters with the single signal delivers the grindstone, the whole force moving as one object. The image is exact: the grindstone's impact is not the impact of its largest particle but the impact of its unity, and the unity is the division and the signal made visible.

The whole weight is also the community's accumulated position - the record, the allies, the reputation, the preparation - and the direct engagement is the moment at which the accumulated position is spent. The community that has built the position in the quiet season delivers it as the grindstone; the community that has not delivers an empty shell, which the egg is not. The grindstone is not the statement; the statement is the shell of the grindstone, and the weight inside is the accumulated conduct the audience already believes.

The Egg Is the Weak Point, Not the Enemy

The egg is the enemy's weak point, and the image is worth reading exactly because it is easy to misread. The egg is not the enemy; the enemy is the whole position, and the egg is the one exposed part of it that the indirect method located. The direct approach does not dash itself against the enemy's whole position; it dashes itself against the weak point, and the weak point is the part that breaks. The enemy's credibility, its contradiction, its abandoned commitment - the egg is the specific undefended surface, and the grindstone is delivered to it.

The precision of the target is the direct approach's whole doctrine of force. The community that dashes the grindstone against the enemy's strength has dashed it against another grindstone, and the meeting is a contest of equal force, which the larger or better-prepared enemy wins. The community that dashes the grindstone against the egg has spent its whole weight on the one point that breaks, and the breaking point decides the engagement. The science of weak points and strong is the bridge between the two methods because it supplies the target, and the target is everything.

The Grindstone in a Mod Team

The grindstone has a specific shape in a mod team, where the community's whole weight is a small number of volunteers and the direct engagement is the team's official position. The team's grindstone is its moderation record, its documented policies, and its consistent conduct; the egg is the single aspect of the accusation the team can break with the record. The team that enters the direct engagement and argues the accusation in the abstract has dashed its whole weight against the enemy's framing; the team that delivers its record against the one undefended point has dashed the grindstone against the egg.

The mod team's direct engagement is also the engagement in which the grindstone is most often confused with its own absence. A team with a strong record but a weak statement has delivered a grindstone wrapped in paper; a team with a weak record and a strong statement has delivered paper wrapped as a grindstone. The audience reads the whole object, and the whole object is the statement and the record together. The team that wants the grindstone's impact must have both halves, and the discipline of the direct approach is the discipline of keeping the two halves joined.

The Grindstone and the Ants in One Table

The grindstone and the ants are the two possible outcomes of the same engagement, and the comparison is the commander's field guide to the direct approach:

DecisionThe antsThe grindstone
Where the force goesAgainst the prepared claimAgainst the undefended point
What the force meetsThe enemy's strengthThe enemy's egg
How the meeting readsA contest of equal forceA whole weight on one point
What decides itSize and preparationThe target's breaking
The cohort's record38% favorable71% favorable

The table is the direct approach's arithmetic. The left column is the engagement the community loses by fighting it as the enemy arranged; the right column is the engagement the community wins by delivering its whole weight where the defense is absent. The 38% and 71% are the two methods' prices, and the difference between them is the entire subject of the direct doctrine: the target is everything, and the target is supplied by the preparation.

The Grindstone in the Licensing Dispute

The Foundry example is the grindstone working at its smallest scale, and it rewards a careful reading because every part of the doctrine is present in it. The indirect preparation was the location of the weak point: the rival's own announcement, published two months earlier, which contradicted the distortion on the central fact. The indirect preparation was also the refusal to argue the distortion point by point, which would have met the enemy's strength on the enemy's chosen ground. And the direct approach was the delivery of the grindstone: the two statements, side by side, with dates, which was the whole weight of the contradiction against the egg of the rival's credibility.

The example shows the two methods in the exact relation the doctrine states. The indirect located the weak point and changed the ground; the direct delivered the decision on that ground. Foundry did not choose between the methods; it used the indirect to prepare and the direct to conclude, and the engagement was over within 72 hours. The community that reads the example and fights directly without the location has missed the example's whole lesson: the grindstone is only decisive because the egg was already found.

Attack the Undefended Point

The sixth chapter supplies the doctrine of the attack itself: the point that is attacked must be the point that is not defended.

You can be sure of succeeding in your attacks if you only attack places which are undefended.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

Hence that general is skillful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skillful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

In the drama engagement, the undefended place is the aspect of the opposing camp's position that has not been prepared, because the opposing camp has prepared the aspect it expects to be attacked. The direct approach that attacks the prepared claim where it is strongest is the assault of the ants; the direct approach that attacks the claim where it is least defended is the grindstone. The commander whose opponent does not know what to defend has achieved the highest expression of the art: every part of the enemy's position is guarded, because every part is suspected.

Did you know?

The Yamak Institute's 2021 report, Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare, records that the decisive direct statement in a drama engagement was, in 63% of cases, not the statement that answered the enemy's claim, but the statement that attacked a part of the enemy's position the enemy had not defended. The enemy defends the accusation; it does not defend its own history, its own commitments, or its own archive. The direct approach attacks where the defense is absent.

The Enemy Does Not Know What to Defend

The highest expression of the direct approach is the opponent that does not know what to defend, and the condition is produced, not found. The community that has read the enemy's history, its commitments, and its defensiveness knows where the enemy is weak; the enemy, seeing the community's preparation but not its target, must defend everywhere, and the defense of everything is the defense of nothing. The commander whose opponent must guard every part has achieved the art's aim: the enemy's force is distributed, and the community's is concentrated.

The condition is produced by the direct approach's conduct as much as by its preparation. The community that has appeared at unexpected points, changed the ground, and left the enemy guessing has made the enemy defend everywhere; the community that has telegraphed its target has let the enemy concentrate on it. The doctrine's two methods work together here: the indirect approach has kept the enemy guessing, and the direct approach then strikes the point the enemy was not guarding, because the enemy did not know which point to guard.

The Assault of the Ants

The direct approach has a failure mode, and the doctrine names it in the image of the assault of the ants: the attack that meets the prepared claim where it is strongest. The community that answers the enemy's accusation point by point, on the accusation's own ground, has dashed itself against the enemy's strength, and the meeting is the contest of equal force the grindstone is meant to avoid. The assault of the ants is the direct engagement fought without the indirect preparation, and it is the direct approach's most common misuse.

The ants fail in a specific way. The enemy has prepared the accusation - the claims, the screenshots, the framing - and the community that argues with it point by point is playing the enemy's prepared game, where the enemy holds the better hand. Each point the community answers is a point the enemy has prepared an answer to, and the exchange is the enemy's drawn-out debate, which favors the enemy. The cohort data records that direct engagements opened without the location of the weak point produced favorable outcomes for the initiator in 38% of cases - the direct engagement's worst rate, and the mirror of the indirect opening's best.

Where the Defense Is Absent

The direct approach attacks where the defense is absent, and the absence is the enemy's own choice. The enemy defends the accusation because the accusation is the aspect it expects to be attacked; it does not defend its own history, its own commitments, or its own archive, because it does not expect those to be brought against it. The 63% figure is the empirical form of the asymmetry: the decisive direct statement attacked the undefended aspect, not the accusation, and the undefended aspect was the enemy's own record.

The doctrine's counsel is therefore not to find a cleverer way to attack the accusation; it is to attack something else. The community that has read the enemy's history can bring the contradiction; the community that has read the enemy's commitments can bring the abandoned promise; the community that has read the enemy's archive can bring the dated record. The defense is absent from these aspects because the enemy concentrated it on the accusation, and the concentration is the enemy's exposure. The direct approach delivers the grindstone to the aspect the enemy chose not to guard.

The Undefended Point in a Review War

The undefended point has a specific shape in the review war, the engagement in which an enemy organizes a coordinated wave of negative reviews against a community's mod or map. The enemy's defense is concentrated on the reviews themselves: the numbers, the screenshots, the coordinated timing. The community that argues with the reviews on the reviews' ground has attacked the prepared claim where it is strongest. The undefended point is the pattern behind the reviews - the timestamps, the similar wording, the account histories - and the pattern is the aspect the enemy did not prepare, because the enemy did not expect the pattern itself to be brought against it.

The direct approach delivers the grindstone to the pattern. The community's statement presents the reviews' timestamps, their shared wording, and the account histories of their authors, and the presentation changes the question from "is the mod bad" to "who organized this." The enemy's defense was the reviews, and the reviews are the very thing the statement turns into evidence. The undefended point was the enemy's own campaign, exposed in its coordination, and the direct approach attacked where the defense was absent. The reader who wants the fullest treatment of the weapon should see The Review War.

Reading the Enemy's Concentration

The undefended point is found by reading the enemy's concentration, and the reading is the direct approach's intelligence work. The enemy concentrates its defense on the aspect it expects to be attacked - the accusation, the claim, the framing - and the concentration is the map of what the enemy believes is at risk. The community that reads the concentration knows what the enemy has prepared and what it has not, and the not is the undefended point.

The reading has a discipline the commander should practice. The enemy's concentration is read from its conduct: the claims it documents, the screenshots it prepares, the replies it rehearses. The community that reads the conduct knows where the enemy's force is and where it is not, and the knowledge is the direct approach's whole target. The enemy that has concentrated everything on the accusation has left its history, its commitments, and its archive undefended, and the undefended aspects are the points the grindstone is dashed against. The concentration is the enemy's choice, and the choice is the enemy's exposure.

Appear Where You Are Not Expected

The direct engagement is also an exercise in the management of the enemy's attention, and the sixth chapter carries forward the deception doctrine into the method of the approach.

Appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected.

  • Sun Tzu, The Art of War, ch. 6, Weak Points and Strong

The community that marches to the expected point allows the enemy to concentrate. The community that appears at the unexpected point - the surface the enemy did not prepare, the platform the enemy did not monitor, the question the enemy did not anticipate - forces the enemy to hurry its defense, and the hurried defense is the weak defense. The direct approach is not a static declaration; it is a movement, and the movement chooses the ground.

Documented example

In 2023, the "Iron Peak" network was accused by a rival of inflating its player counts. The accusation was published on the rival's Discord and repeated across forums. Iron Peak's commander did not contest the accusation on the forums, where the rival had concentrated its observers. Instead, on the network's own server page, the commander published the network's full documented connection history for the preceding quarter, with the hosting provider's independent counters, alongside the accusation and its source. The attack had appeared where the rival was not watching: on the network's own surface, where the evidence could not be disputed and the record could not be moderated. The rival, forced to hurry a defense on an unfamiliar surface, produced a response that contradicted its own earlier claims, and the engagement collapsed in the rival's hands. See Why Discord Embeds Are the Foundation of Server Credibility for the surface that carried the record.

The March to the Expected Point

The march to the expected point is the direct approach's most common error, and it is an error of attention rather than of argument. The enemy publishes the accusation on its own surface, concentrates its observers there, and prepares its rebuttals there; the community that answers on that surface has marched to the expected point and allowed the enemy to concentrate. The enemy's prepared rebuttals meet the community's answer on the enemy's ground, and the exchange is the enemy's game.

The expected point is expected because the enemy has arranged for it to be: the accusation thread, the shared forum, the monitored channel are the surfaces the enemy controls, where its observers are posted and its rebuttals are rehearsed. The community that answers there has accepted the enemy's field, and the field favors the enemy regardless of the argument's strength. The cohort data records that direct engagements answered on the accuser's surface produced favorable outcomes for the accused at a materially lower rate than engagements answered on the community's own surface, because the surface is the engagement's first decision.

The Unexpected Surface

The appearance at the unexpected point is the direct approach's movement, and the movement is the management of the enemy's attention. The community that appears on its own surface - the server page, the official channel, the maintained record - has chosen the field it controls, where its evidence cannot be disputed and its record cannot be moderated. The Iron Peak example is the movement at its simplest: the accusation was answered not on the forums, where the rival's observers were, but on the network's own page, where the evidence was unanswerable.

The unexpected surface forces the enemy to hurry. The enemy that prepared a rebuttal for the forums must now defend on a surface it did not prepare, against evidence it did not anticipate, and the hurried defense is the weak defense. The Iron Peak rival produced a response that contradicted its own earlier claims, and the contradiction was the enemy's collapse. The movement is the doctrine's deception carried into the direct engagement: the enemy was made to defend the wrong point, because the community appeared where the enemy was not watching.

The Question the Enemy Did Not Anticipate

The unexpected point is not only a surface; it is also a question. The community that answers the accusation with the question the enemy did not anticipate has changed the ground of the direct engagement, and the changed ground is the enemy's unfamiliar field. The question is drawn from the enemy's own record - the abandoned commitment, the contradiction, the dated statement - and the enemy, forced to answer on a question it did not prepare for, produces the hurried defense.

The unanticipated question is the direct engagement's most efficient instrument, because it does not require the community to argue the accusation at all. The community that asks the question has placed the burden on the enemy: the enemy must now explain its own record, and the explanation is the defense the enemy did not prepare. The 63% figure is the empirical form of the instrument: the decisive direct statement attacked the undefended aspect, and the undefended aspect was most often the enemy's own record, raised as a question the enemy could not answer without contradicting itself.

The Movement in a Server Network

The movement of the direct approach has a specific shape in a server network, where the community occupies several surfaces and the enemy has concentrated on one. The enemy monitors the network's main server and prepares its rebuttals there; the network's commander appears instead on the surface the enemy did not prepare - the smaller server, the official page, the maintained archive - and delivers the statement where the enemy is not watching. The movement has appeared at the unexpected point, and the enemy must hurry its defense on an unfamiliar field.

The network's movement is the direct approach's doctrine applied to the network's own geography. The community that knows its surfaces knows which ones the enemy watches and which it neglects, and the knowledge is the movement's map. The Iron Peak example is the movement at its simplest scale: the network answered on its own server page, and the rival, forced to hurry, contradicted itself. The network that cannot move between its surfaces has made itself a fixed target, and the fixed target is the enemy's concentration made easy.

The Hurried Defense

The appearance at the unexpected point works because it forces the hurried defense, and the hurried defense is the weak defense. The enemy that has prepared a rebuttal for the expected point must now answer on the unexpected one, against evidence it did not anticipate, without the preparation it had assembled. The hurry is the enemy's own conduct, and the hurry produces the errors: the contradiction, the overreach, the statement made without the record.

The hurried defense is the direct approach's most efficient instrument, because the community does not have to defeat the enemy's position; the enemy defeats its own position by defending it in haste. The Iron Peak rival produced a response that contradicted its own earlier claims, and the contradiction was the engagement's end. The cohort data records the pattern in every year: the decisive direct engagements were won, in a large share of cases, not against the enemy's prepared position but against the enemy's hurried defense of the unprepared one. The appearance at the unexpected point is the instrument that produces the hurry, and the hurry is the victory.

The Direct as the Consequence of Preparation

The direct approach is the visible act of a position that the indirect method has prepared, and the commander should therefore refuse the direct engagement until the preparation is complete. The sequence is fixed by the doctrine, and the cohort data records the sequence's failure mode.

StageMethodInstrument
1IndirectLocate the enemy's weak point and the community's strong point
2IndirectChange the ground, the timing, and the question
3DirectDeliver the whole force against the undefended point
4DirectIssue the single consolidated statement on the single surface
5DirectClose the engagement cleanly and do not overreach

Critical warning

The direct engagement must be entered with the outcome already prepared, and the moment the outcome is achieved, the engagement must be closed. The community that wins the direct confrontation and then presses for a public surrender, a formal apology, or a ritual humiliation has converted its victory into the enemy's recruiting material. The cohort data records that communities which overreached after a won direct engagement lost the resulting sympathy in 58% of cases. The direct approach is the instrument of the decision, not the instrument of the punishment. See On the Economics of Drama for the cost of the engagement that is not closed.

The Sequence Is Fixed

The sequence of the two methods is fixed by the doctrine, and the fixing is the whole of the direct approach's discipline. The indirect preparation comes first: the weak point located, the ground changed, the question set. The direct delivery comes second: the whole force delivered, the single statement issued, the engagement closed. The order cannot be reversed, because the direct delivery without the indirect preparation is the assault of the ants, and the indirect preparation without the direct delivery is the work of the engagement withheld.

The fixed sequence is the doctrine's answer to the community that wants to fight directly because it is impatient. The direct engagement is tempting because it feels like action - the statement, the position, the challenge - and the indirect preparation feels like delay. The doctrine's answer is that the direct engagement without the preparation is the engagement's worst outcome: the community meets the enemy's strength unprepared, and the meeting is the clean defeat. The community that refuses the direct engagement until the preparation is complete has not delayed the engagement; it has made the engagement winnable.

The Preparation the Community Must Complete

The preparation is not abstract, and the commander should be able to name the parts that must be complete before the direct engagement is joined. The weak point must be located: the enemy's undefended surface, named from the enemy's own record. The ground must be chosen: the surface where the community's evidence cannot be disputed and the record cannot be moderated. The position must be consolidated: the single statement, containing the evidence, the record, and the demand, ready to be issued whole. And the single voice must be secured: the community ready to hold the line behind the statement, without a second signal.

Each part has a verification, and the verifications are the direct engagement's entrance tests. The commander who can name the enemy's weak point in a sentence, justify the chosen surface in a sentence, show the consolidated statement, and trust the single voice has completed the preparation and may join the engagement. The commander who cannot pass the four tests is not ready, and the doctrine's counsel is to complete the preparation rather than to join the engagement empty. The direct approach is the decision, and the decision is only as good as the preparation that precedes it.

The Prepared Community in One Table

The preparation's four parts are read most quickly in comparison, and the table is the version a commander can keep with the entrance tests:

Preparation partWhat it requiresThe verificationThe failure if skipped
The weak pointThe enemy's undefended surface, namedNamed in one sentenceThe assault of the ants
The groundThe community's own surface, justifiedJustified in one sentenceThe enemy's field, the enemy's advantage
The positionThe consolidated statement, wholeShown completeThe fragment the enemy answers
The voiceThe single signal, securedTrusted across the membershipThe seam the enemy strikes

The table is the entrance test made operational. Each row is a part of the preparation, its requirement, its verification, and the cost of skipping it. The community that passes all four rows is ready to join the direct engagement; the community that passes some and not others will discover, in the engagement, exactly which rows it skipped, because the skipped row is the point where the engagement is lost.

The Overreach After the Win

The direct engagement's final discipline is the close, and the close is the discipline of not overreaching. The community that wins the direct confrontation and then presses for a public surrender, a formal apology, or a ritual humiliation has converted its victory into the enemy's recruiting material: the audience that was convinced by the community's evidence turns against the community's conduct, and the engagement that was won becomes the campaign that was lost. The cohort data records the cost precisely: communities which overreached after a won direct engagement lost the resulting sympathy in 58% of cases.

The overreach is the direct approach's most characteristic failure, because it is the failure of the victory itself. The community that has won the engagement holds the stronger position, and the temptation to use the position for more than the decision is the temptation the doctrine names. The direct approach is the instrument of the decision, not the instrument of the punishment, and the community that uses the instrument for the punishment has spent the victory it won. The close is the moment at which the community proves it understands what it fought for: the decision, and not the enemy's humiliation.

Documented Example: The Statement That Was Issued Where the Enemy Was Not

The doctrine is not a set of abstractions but a set of decisions, and decisions are best shown in cases. The example below is a study in the movement of the direct approach: a community that appeared at the unexpected point, delivered the grindstone against the undefended point, and closed the engagement before the overreach could spend it.

Documented example

In 2023, the "Quarry" mod team was accused by a rival of copying a popular map's layout. The rival published a detailed comparison on the shared modding forum, where it had concentrated its supporters and prepared its rebuttals. Quarry's commander declined the forum. The team had maintained, for two years, a documented design history on its own server page: the original layout sketches with their timestamps, the public previews posted months before the rival's map existed, and the changelog entries showing the layout's evolution. The team consolidated the record into a single pinned statement on its own page, and issued it the same evening. The statement did not argue with the comparison; it presented the dated sketches and previews, whole, and it asked one question the rival had not anticipated: why had the rival's map, released later, matched the design history the team had published months earlier? The rival, forced to answer on an unfamiliar surface, produced a response that contradicted its own release notes. The forum thread, which had prepared for a debate, found itself pointing at a completed position on a page it had not watched. The engagement was over within a week, and Quarry did not press for an apology. It closed the engagement with its record intact.

The example rewards a careful reading, because every stage of the direct doctrine is present in it. The preparation was the two years of design history - the sketches, the previews, the changelog - maintained before the accusation existed. The movement was the decline of the forum and the appearance on the team's own page, where the rival was not watching. The grindstone was the dated record, presented whole against the egg of the rival's release chronology. And the unanticipated question - why did the rival's map match the earlier public design history - was the undefended point, raised from the rival's own record, which the rival could not answer without contradicting itself.

The example also shows the close. Quarry won the engagement and did not press for an apology or a humiliation; it closed the engagement with its record intact. The rival's campaign had collapsed under its own contradiction, and the collapse was the decision. The community that reads the example and presses the win into a punishment has missed the example's closing lesson: the direct approach is the instrument of the decision, and the decision was already made when the rival contradicted itself. The victory was preserved by the discipline of not spending it.

The Discipline in Practice

The doctrine of the direct approach reduces to a set of habits, and the commander who wants to apply it should be able to see the habits clearly, separated from the images that carry them. Each habit below is a repetition, not a project: it does not require a campaign, only that the community do the same small thing the same way until it is the community's default.

PracticeWhat it looks like weeklyWhat it prevents
Maintain the recordChangelog, logs, and policies current, every timeThe empty statement at the moment of decision
Hold the single voiceMembers check the official channel before speaking for the communityThe seam and the divided force
Practice the divisionEach member holds a named part of the positionThe single exhausted voice carrying everything
Read the enemy's concentrationNote where the enemy has prepared and where it has notThe assault of the ants
Choose the surfaceAnswer on the community's own fieldThe march to the expected point
Consolidate before issuingThe position is assembled whole before it is postedThe fragment the enemy answers
Close the engagementEnd at the decision, do not press the winThe overreach that spends the victory

None of these practices is dramatic, which is why they are often skipped. The doctrine's whole claim in this article is that the direct engagement is decided by the undramatic work: the record kept, the voice held, the division practiced, the surface chosen, the engagement closed. The community that does the undramatic work has made the direct approach the decision the doctrine describes; the community that skips it has made the direct approach the assault of the ants.

The practices are ordered by their place in the engagement. The record is first because it is the grindstone's weight; the voice and the division are the engagement's organization; the reading and the surface are the engagement's movement; and the consolidation and the close are the engagement's delivery and its end. A community that works the list top to bottom has joined the direct engagement as the doctrine prescribes. A community that works it in any other order - issuing before consolidating, answering before reading, pressing after winning - is the community the cohort records as the ants, the divided force, or the overreach, and the record is the price of the order.

The Yamak Institute Cohort Data

The direct doctrine of this article rests on the Yamak Institute's cohort research into the methods and outcomes of community conflict, which has tracked more than 1,800 documented drama engagements across the Unturned community since 2018. The research is longitudinal and comparative: engagements are logged with the method of their preparation, the shape of their decisive statement, and their outcome, and the outcomes are measured against the direct engagement's discipline. The primary records are presented below in the register in which the Institute publishes them.

The relation between the cohorts is worth stating before the records themselves, because the relation is the doctrine. The direct doctrine's numbers are not a set of separate findings; they are the four disciplines of the direct engagement, each priced: the preparation (71%), the target (63%), the voice (74% as the cost of its failure), and the close (58% as the cost of its failure). The cohorts together record that the direct engagement is won by the prepared, targeted, single-voiced, closed community, and lost by the unprepared, mis-targeted, divided, unclosed one.

The Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare (2021)

The flagship finding of the chapter, Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare (2021), records two of the direct doctrine's central numbers. Engagements resolved by a clean direct confrontation - where the community had first completed the indirect preparation - produced a favorable outcome for the prepared community in 71% of cases, and the decisive direct statement in a drama engagement attacked a part of the enemy's position the enemy had not defended in 63% of cases. The study is the chapter's empirical spine: it prices the direct approach's discipline and its target.

The Cohort of the Divided Force (2022)

The Institute's 2022 cohort tracked the signal discipline of the direct engagement. Communities which issued conflicting statements from different official voices lost direct engagements in 74% of cases, because the conflict itself became the story. The cohort is the empirical form of the division and the signal: it records that the direct approach is the visible act of an organization, and that the organization's failure is the direct engagement's most expensive error.

The Cohort of the Closed Engagement (2022)

The complement of the divided force is the unclosed engagement, and the Institute's 2022 cohort records its cost. Communities which overreached after a won direct engagement - pressing for a surrender, an apology, or a humiliation - lost the resulting sympathy in 58% of cases. The cohort is the empirical form of the close: it records that the direct approach is the instrument of the decision and not of the punishment, and that the victory is spent by the conduct that follows it.

The Cohort of the Chosen Surface (2023)

The Institute's 2023 cohort tracked the movement of the direct approach. Direct engagements answered on the accuser's surface - the surface where the enemy had concentrated its observers and rehearsed its rebuttals - produced favorable outcomes for the accused at a materially lower rate than engagements answered on the community's own surface, where the evidence could not be disputed and the record could not be moderated. The cohort is the empirical form of the unexpected point: it records that the surface is the direct engagement's first decision, and that the movement chooses the ground.

The Cohort of the Unanticipated Question (2024)

The Institute's 2024 cohort tracked the question the enemy did not anticipate. Direct engagements in which the decisive statement raised a question from the enemy's own record - a contradiction, an abandoned commitment, a dated statement - resolved in the initiator's favor at a materially higher rate than engagements in which the statement argued the accusation directly. The cohort is the empirical form of the undefended point: it records that the most efficient direct statement does not argue the accusation at all, but places the burden of the enemy's own record on the enemy.

The Cohort in One Table

The Institute's primary records are read most quickly in summary, and the summary table is the reference a commander can keep with the moderation notes.

StudyYearPopulationPrincipal finding
Longitudinal Cohort Study of Developer Drama and Community Warfare2021tracked engagementsPrepared direct engagements won at 71%; decisive statements hit the undefended aspect at 63%
The cohort of the divided force2022tracked engagementsConflicting official voices lost direct engagements at 74%
The cohort of the closed engagement2022tracked engagementsOverreach after a win lost the sympathy at 58%
The cohort of the chosen surface2023tracked engagementsAnswering on the enemy's surface lost at a materially higher rate
The cohort of the unanticipated question2024tracked engagementsStatements raising the enemy's own record resolved at a materially higher rate

The table makes the chapter's direct claims portable. The 71% is the prepared decision's price; the 63% is the undefended target's premium; the 74% is the divided force's cost; the 58% is the overreach's price; the chosen surface's advantage is the movement's value; and the unanticipated question's advantage is the burden of the enemy's own record. The commander who carries the table carries the chapter's empirical spine in six rows.

The Five-Stage Protocol for the Direct Engagement

The doctrine of this article is operational, and the Institute's field manual reduces it to a five-stage protocol that a community manager executes when the campaign reaches the point at which the two camps must meet. Each stage has a verification step, and the protocol is designed to be run in the order the doctrine presents: the preparation first, the movement second, the delivery third, the statement fourth, and the close last.

The protocol's order is its discipline, and the discipline is worth stating before the stages. The five stages cannot be rearranged to save time: the community that joins the engagement before the preparation is complete has skipped the part that makes the decision winnable, and the community that delays the close past the decision has spent the victory it won. The stages are a sequence because each makes the next possible, and the commander who runs them in order has the whole doctrine in one execution. The community that runs them in any other order is not executing the protocol; it is improvising in the shape of a plan, and the cohort records the improvisation's price at the failure of every skipped stage.

Stage 1: Complete the Preparation

Confirm that the indirect preparation is complete before the direct engagement is joined. The enemy's weak point is located and named; the ground is chosen; the position is consolidated; the single voice is secured. The verification step is the entrance test: the commander can name the weak point in a sentence, justify the surface in a sentence, show the consolidated statement, and trust the single voice. A community that passes Stage 1 is ready to join the engagement; a community that fails it is about to fight unprepared, and the unprepared direct engagement is the assault of the ants.

Stage 2: Choose the Surface

Decide where the direct engagement will be joined. The surface is the community's own - the server page, the official channel, the maintained record - where the evidence cannot be disputed and the record cannot be moderated. The verification step is the field test: the commander can state, in one sentence, why the chosen surface favors the community and why the enemy's surface was declined. A community that passes Stage 2 has appeared at the unexpected point; a community that fails it has marched to the expected point and allowed the enemy to concentrate.

Stage 3: Deliver the Whole Force

Deliver the community's entire weight against the enemy's undefended point, whole, at the chosen hour. The delivery is the grindstone: the whole force, divided and signaled, spent against the egg of the enemy's weak point. The verification step is the target test: the commander can state, in one sentence, the single undefended aspect the delivery is aimed at. A community that passes Stage 3 has dashed the grindstone against the egg; a community that fails it has dashed it against another grindstone, and the meeting is the contest the enemy prepared for.

Stage 4: Issue the Single Statement

Issue the consolidated statement by the single voice, on the single surface, and hold every member to it. The statement contains the evidence, the record, and the demand, whole; the members hold the line behind it without a second signal. The verification step is the signal test: the community can confirm, before the statement is posted, that every member holds the same line and that no second signal will issue. A community that passes Stage 4 has produced the visible position; a community that fails it has divided its own force, and the enemy will strike the seam.

Stage 5: Close and Do Not Overreach

Close the engagement the moment the decision is achieved, and do not press the victory into a punishment. The decision is the changed question and the audience's conclusion; the close is the return to the record and the quiet season. The verification step is the closing test: the community can state, one sentence, what was decided and when the engagement ended. A community that passes Stage 5 has used the direct approach as the instrument of the decision; a community that fails it has converted its victory into the enemy's recruiting material, and the conversion is the 58%.

The Protocol in One Page

The five stages are read most quickly in summary, and the summary table is the version a community manager can keep with the moderation notes.

The one-page protocol is the chapter's operational core, and the community that works it in order has joined the direct engagement as the doctrine prescribes: prepared, positioned, delivered, stated, and closed. The community that works it in any other order - joining before the preparation, answering on the enemy's surface, issuing a divided signal, overreaching after the win - is the community the cohort records as the divided force or the unclosed engagement, and the record is the price of the order.

Objections

The direct doctrine meets resistance, and the resistance is predictable enough to be answered in advance. The objections below are the twelve most common raised by community managers who have been asked to join the direct engagement prepared, positioned, and closed. Each is answered in the doctrine's voice.

Objection 1: "The direct approach is too aggressive; it will make us look combative."

The doctrine's answer is that the direct approach is the method of the decision, and the decision is combative only when it is conducted as combat. The single consolidated statement - the evidence, the record, and the demand, issued whole, without rhetoric - reads as the community standing on its position, not as the community attacking its enemy. The cohort data records that prepared direct engagements won at 71%, and the wins were won by communities that held the line, not by communities that swung. The community that confuses the direct approach with aggression has confused the statement with the punishment, and the punishment is the overreach the doctrine warns against.

Objection 2: "We prefer to stay indirect; the direct approach exposes us."

The doctrine's answer is that the exposure is the direct approach's nature, and the preparation is what makes the exposure survivable. The direct statement is quoted, checked, and held against the community; the community that joins it unprepared is exposed to that holding. The community that joins it prepared - the weak point located, the record current, the voice single - has nothing to fear from the holding, because the record is the community's own. The doctrine does not require the community to be indirect forever; it requires the community to be indirect until the exposure is safe, and the direct approach is the moment at which the safety is spent.

Objection 3: "Our community cannot issue a single voice; members speak for themselves."

The doctrine's answer is that the single voice is built, not discovered, and it is built in the quiet season. The members who speak for the community in their own words are the community's own force, and the discipline is to give the force a single shape at the moment of the statement. The cohort records the cost of the alternative: communities which issued conflicting statements from different official voices lost direct engagements in 74% of cases. The objection names the community's current condition, not its permanent one; the single voice is the arrangement, and the arrangement is the commander's work in the quiet season.

Objection 4: "We do not know the enemy's weak point well enough to strike it."

The doctrine's answer is that the weak point is in the enemy's public record, and the record is available to any commander who will read it. The enemy's history, commitments, and defensiveness are public; the contradiction, the abandoned promise, and the refusal are readable. The 63% figure is the empirical form of the reading: the decisive direct statement attacked the undefended aspect, and the undefended aspect was the enemy's own record. The objection names the community's failure to read, not the record's absence, and the reading is the whole of the direct approach's preparation.

Objection 5: "The enemy will quote our statement against us for years."

The doctrine's answer is that the enemy will quote whatever the community says, and the only defense is to say what the community can stand by. The direct statement that contains the evidence, the record, and the demand, issued without rhetoric, is the statement the community can stand by: the record is true, and the position is the community's own. The enemy's quoting of a true statement is the enemy's exposure, not the community's. The community that avoids the direct approach because the enemy might quote it has surrendered the decision to avoid being quoted, and the surrender is the direct engagement's opposite.

Objection 6: "We tried a direct statement and it was ignored."

The doctrine's answer is that the statement is ignored when it is not prepared, positioned, or delivered. The direct statement that is issued before the weak point is located is arguing the accusation on the enemy's ground; the direct statement that is issued on the enemy's surface is posted where the enemy's observers are; the direct statement that is issued by a divided voice is contradicted by its own side. The cohort records each condition as a distinct failure - the unprepared engagement, the enemy's surface, the divided force - and the failures are the doctrine's stages skipped. The statement was not ignored because the direct approach failed; it was ignored because the direct approach was never actually executed.

Objection 7: "The indirect approach is sufficient; we do not need the direct."

The doctrine's answer is the fifth chapter's own division: the direct method is the method of joining battle, and the indirect method is the method of securing victory. The indirect approach prepares the decision but does not declare it; the declaration is the direct approach, and the community that refuses it has done the work of the engagement and withheld its result. The prepared community that declined the direct decision resolved its engagements at a materially lower rate than the prepared community that took it, because the audience waits for the declaration. The indirect method is the engine; the direct approach is the moment the engine is spent, and the refusal of the moment is the refusal of the result.

Objection 8: "Attacking the enemy's weak point feels like a personal attack."

The doctrine's answer is that the weak point is the enemy's record, not the enemy's person. The contradiction, the abandoned commitment, the dated statement - these are the enemy's own public conduct, presented to the audience, and the presentation is the direct approach's discipline. The attack that names the enemy's conduct is not the personal attack that names the enemy's character; the doctrine's boundary is the record, and the record is where the direct approach strikes. The community that cannot strike the record has chosen the assault of the ants, and the ants are the engagement's losing shape.

Objection 9: "The direct approach only works for communities with a strong record."

The doctrine concedes the point and prices it. The grindstone is the community's accumulated weight, and the weight is the record; the community without a record delivers an empty shell, which the egg is not. The doctrine's counsel to the community without a record is the same as its counsel everywhere: build the record first, and the grindstone becomes available as the record grows. The direct approach is not closed to the young community; it is the reward for the preparation, and the preparation is the record, the allies, and the position, built in the quiet season.

Objection 10: "We cannot choose the surface; the enemy dictates where the fight happens."

The doctrine's answer is that the surface is chosen by the community, and the choice is the engagement's first decision. The enemy publishes the accusation on its own surface, and the community is not obliged to answer there; the Iron Peak network answered on its own server page, where the rival was not watching, and the engagement collapsed in the rival's hands. The cohort records the price of accepting the enemy's surface: direct engagements answered on the accuser's surface lost at a materially higher rate. The enemy dictates the accusation, not the field; the field is the community's choice, and the choice is the movement.

Objection 11: "We won a direct engagement once and it hurt us."

The doctrine's answer is that the win that hurts is the win that is not closed. The community that wins the direct confrontation and then presses for a surrender, an apology, or a humiliation has converted its victory into the enemy's recruiting material, and the cohort records the cost at 58%. The win that hurts is the overreach, not the decision; the decision is the changed question and the audience's conclusion, and the close is the moment the community returns to the record. The community that was hurt by its win was hurt by its own conduct after the win, and the conduct is the overreach the doctrine warns against.

Objection 12: "The direct approach is too risky for our community."

The doctrine's answer is that the risk is managed by the preparation, and the preparation is the whole of the doctrine. The direct approach is risky when it is joined empty - the weak point unknown, the record unready, the voice divided - and the risk is the risk of the assault of the ants. The direct approach is safe when it is joined prepared, positioned, and closed, and the cohort records the safety at 71%. The objection names the risk of the unprepared direct engagement, and the doctrine's answer is not to refuse the direct approach but to prepare it. The community that refuses every direct engagement because it is risky has refused the decision because it did not prepare, and the refusal is the preparation's opposite.

Objection 13: "The direct approach leaves the community exposed to counter-attack."

The doctrine's answer is that the exposure is managed by the record, and the record is the community's armor. The direct statement is quoted, checked, and held against the community; the counter-attack is the enemy's attempt to use the statement against the community. The community that issues a statement over a true, current record has issued a statement that the counter-attack cannot break: the enemy's attack on the statement is an attack on the record, and the record survives the attack because it is true. The cohort records the pattern in the prepared community's favor: communities which joined the direct engagement over a maintained record absorbed the counter-attack and kept their position, while communities which joined over a neglected record were broken by it. The exposure is real, and the preparation is the exposure's price.

Objection 14: "We cannot write a statement that is both complete and short enough to be read."

The doctrine's answer is that the statement is complete and the record is long, and the division is the discipline. The statement presents the decision: the single point, the contradiction, the dated record, in the fewest words that carry it. The record holds the detail: the full logs, the complete history, the entire archive, linked from the statement. The audience reads the statement, and the audience that wants the detail follows the link. The statement that tries to contain the whole record is too long to be read, and the statement that tries to be short without the record is too thin to be believed. The complete statement is the short statement over the linked record, and the two halves are the engagement's whole force.

FAQ

Q: What is the function of the direct approach?

A: The direct approach is the method of joining battle: the statement that names the opponent, the position staked publicly, the challenge offered. It is the method of contact, and it is required whenever the campaign has reached the point at which the two camps must meet. It is not a failure of the doctrine; it is the doctrine's instrument of decision. The indirect method prepares the ground, and the direct approach delivers the decision on it - the 71% figure is the prepared direct engagement's price.

Q: Why is the direct approach not the simpler method?

A: Because the direct engagement is the most exposed surface the community has. The statement is quoted, checked, and held against the community; the position is a commitment the community must keep; the challenge is an invitation to be met. The direct approach therefore most rewards preparation, and the community that mistakes it for the easy method arrives at the engagement unprepared. The indirect method can be attempted with nothing and fail invisibly; the direct method is exposed the moment it is made.

Q: What is the single signal?

A: The single signal is the discipline that there is exactly one official position. The community enters the direct engagement with one statement, issued by one voice, on one surface; the members hold the line behind it without elaborating or issuing their own versions. The community that issues two signals has divided its own force, and the enemy will strike the seam. The cohort records the cost: communities which issued conflicting statements from different official voices lost direct engagements in 74% of cases.

Q: What does it mean to dash the grindstone against an egg?

A: It means to deliver the community's whole weight against the enemy's single undefended point, rather than meeting the enemy's strength. The grindstone is the whole force, divided and signaled; the egg is the weak point the indirect method located - the contradiction, the abandoned commitment, the dated record. The direct approach is not the meeting of two equal forces; it is the spending of the whole weight on the one point that breaks. The science of weak points and strong is the bridge: the indirect finds the egg, and the direct delivers the grindstone.

Q: How does the direct approach attack the undefended point?

A: The direct approach attacks the aspect of the enemy's position it did not prepare, because it did not expect to be attacked there. The enemy defends the accusation; it does not defend its own history, its own commitments, or its own archive. The 63% figure is the empirical form: the decisive direct statement attacked the undefended aspect, not the accusation. The community reads the enemy's record, names the undefended aspect, and delivers the grindstone to it - and the enemy, forced to defend what it did not prepare, produces the hurried defense.

Q: Why should the community choose its own surface?

A: Because the surface is the engagement's first decision, and the field favors the side that controls it. The enemy publishes the accusation on its own surface and concentrates its observers there; the community that answers there has marched to the expected point and allowed the enemy to concentrate. The community that appears on its own surface - the server page, the official channel, the maintained record - has chosen the field where its evidence cannot be disputed and its record cannot be moderated. The Iron Peak network answered on its own page, and the rival's hurried defense contradicted its own claims.

Q: What is the sequence that fixes the direct approach?

A: The indirect preparation comes first, and the direct delivery comes second. The weak point is located, the ground is changed, the position is consolidated, and then the whole force is delivered against the undefended point, the single statement is issued, and the engagement is closed. The order cannot be reversed: the direct without the indirect is the assault of the ants, and the indirect without the direct is the work of the engagement withheld. The direct approach is the consequence of preparation, and the preparation is the whole of the doctrine that precedes it.

Q: What is the cost of the overreach?

A: The overreach is the conduct after the win: pressing for a public surrender, a formal apology, or a ritual humiliation. The cohort records its cost at 58% - communities which overreached after a won direct engagement lost the resulting sympathy. The direct approach is the instrument of the decision, not of the punishment, and the community that uses it for the punishment has converted its victory into the enemy's recruiting material. The close is the moment the community returns to the record, and the return is the discipline that preserves the win.

Q: What is the relationship between this article and the one before it?

A: On the Indirect Approach developed the method of winning; this article develops the method of joining battle that the indirect makes possible. The indirect locates the weak point and changes the ground; the direct delivers the decision on that ground. The two are the circle's two halves, and the sequence is fixed: the indirect first, the direct second, and the close after. The reader who carries both articles carries the whole tactical doctrine - the indirect to secure the victory, and the direct to join the battle the victory concludes.

Q: When is the direct approach required?

A: When the campaign has reached the point of decision, when silence would read as concession, and when the community's own position demands to be stated plainly. In each condition, the community's choice is not whether to engage but how. The direct approach is the method of the unavoidable engagement, and the only question is whether it is joined prepared or joined empty. The commander who reads the conditions has read the moment at which the indirect preparation is complete, and the preparation's whole purpose is the direct engagement it makes possible.

Q: How does a community close a won direct engagement?

A: The close is the moment the decision is achieved. The community states, in one sentence, what was decided and when the engagement ended, and it returns to the record and the quiet season. It does not press for a surrender, an apology, or a humiliation, because the pressing converts the victory into the enemy's recruiting material. The closing test is the discipline: the community can name the decision and the end. A community that cannot close its own win is a community that has not understood what it fought for.

Q: What is the difference between the direct statement and the official announcement?

A: The direct statement is the method of joining battle: it names the opponent, stakes the position, and offers the challenge. The official announcement is the ordinary voice of the community - the changelog, the update, the policy - and it is the surface the direct statement is issued on and the record it rests on. The two are not rivals; the official announcement is the record, and the direct statement is the decision that uses it. The community that confuses the two issues its decisions as announcements, which do not name the opponent, or its announcements as decisions, which spend the record on every update. The direct engagement requires the distinction: the announcement maintains the slope, and the statement rolls the stone.

Q: How does the direct approach handle an enemy that refuses to answer?

A: The enemy that refuses to answer has chosen to decline the exchange, and the refusal is the enemy's own conduct, which the audience reads. The community that has issued the single consolidated statement on its own surface, delivered the grindstone against the undefended point, and closed the engagement has done what the direct method can do; the enemy's silence does not undo the statement, and the audience weighs the statement against the silence. The doctrine's counsel is to close the engagement at the decision and not to pursue the enemy into a war of demands, because the pursuit is the overreach and the overreach spends the victory. The direct approach is the decision; the enemy's refusal to answer is the enemy's own verdict on itself.

Q: What is the relationship between this article and the one that follows?

A: On Strategic Positions is the doctrine of the ground on which the direct engagement is joined: the community's place in the landscape, taken by maneuvering, held by readiness, and evaluated by the blend of its advantage and its cost. This article supplied the method of the direct engagement; the next supplies the position that the method is executed from. The direct statement is the visible act, and the strategic position is the ground that makes the act possible. The reader who carries both carries the direct doctrine complete - the decision and the ground it is delivered from.

Q: How does the direct approach relate to the statement war?

A: The direct approach is the method of the single decision; The Statement War is the same method extended across a sustained campaign of statements. Each exchange in the statement war is a direct engagement - a statement, a response, a counter - and each is won or lost by the discipline of this article: the prepared position, the single voice, the chosen surface, the clean close. The community that has mastered the single direct engagement has the instrument the statement war runs on; the community that has not will find its sustained campaign broken at its first exchange. The two articles are the same doctrine at two scales, and the scale of the war is the scale of the repeated decision.

Q: What should a community do when the direct engagement is lost?

A: The lost direct engagement is closed the same way the won one is: at the decision, without the overreach. The community that lost the engagement does not press its losing position into a longer fight, and it does not fabricate a new position to cover the loss; it states what was decided, corrects what was false in its own conduct, and returns to the record. The cohort data records that communities which closed a lost direct engagement honestly preserved more of their credibility than communities which fought on past the decision, because the audience forgives the honest loss and does not forgive the dragged-out one. The direct approach is the decision; the loss is a decision too, and the discipline of the close applies to both outcomes.

Q: How does the direct approach treat the community's own members?

A: The direct engagement is fought with the community's whole visible force, and the members are the force. The division gives each member a small, named part of the position; the single voice requires each member to hold the line without a second signal; and the record is the conduct the members maintained in the quiet season. The doctrine does not ask the members to be heroes; it asks them to be arranged, and the arrangement is the community's whole weight. The community that treats its members as the force to be arranged, rather than as an audience to be informed, has understood the control of the force that the fifth chapter's opening describes.

Appendix A: The Direct Reference

The direct doctrine is read most quickly as a reference table, and the table is the version a community manager can keep with the moderation notes.

InstrumentWhat it governsThe doctrine's rule
The functionWhat the direct approach is forJoining the battle; the instrument of decision
The divisionHow the force is controlledEach member holds a named part; the whole is one object
The single signalHow the position is issuedOne statement, one voice, one surface
The grindstoneHow the force is deliveredThe whole weight against the single weak point
The undefended pointWhere the force is aimedThe aspect the enemy did not prepare
The surfaceWhere the engagement is joinedThe community's own field, where the record cannot be disputed
The sequenceWhen the direct is correctAfter the indirect preparation is complete
The closeWhen the engagement endsAt the decision, without the overreach

The table is the direct doctrine's operational core, and each row is a discipline the community practices. The community that works the table has made the function, the division, the signal, the grindstone, the target, the surface, the sequence, and the close its own instruments, and the instruments are the chapter's whole practical content.

Appendix B: The Complete Direct Chain

The chapter's full argument, laid out as the chain the doctrine follows from the indirect preparation to the closed decision.

The chain is read left to right as a single engagement and top to bottom as the community's whole career. The indirect preparation locates the weak point and changes the ground; the surface is chosen; the force is divided and the single signal secured; the entrance test decides whether the preparation is complete; the grindstone is delivered, the egg struck, the single statement issued, and the line held; the closing test decides whether the decision is achieved; and the engagement is closed, the record kept, and the chain returns to the indirect preparation, because the direct engagement is a decision and not an event. A community that works the chain in order has joined the direct engagement as the doctrine prescribes; a community that works it in any other order - joining before the preparation, issuing a divided signal, overreaching after the win - is the community the cohort records as the assault of the ants, the divided force, or the unclosed engagement, and the record is the price of the order.

Summary

The direct approach is the method of joining battle: the single consolidated statement, delivered by the organized community, against the enemy's undefended point, on the surface the enemy has not prepared. It is decisive when it is the consequence of the indirect method, and it is ruinous when it is entered unprepared. The direct engagement is not the whole of the doctrine; it is the instrument of decision that the whole of the doctrine exists to enable.
